English
3 Trimesters
Modern methods and techniques provide a solid grounding in proper English usage. Individual needs are determined by testing at the beginning of camp.
Mathematics
3 Trimesters
The curriculum is designed and based on student levels in the following areas: prime numbers and factorization, Venn diagrams, multiplication, division, fractions, exponents, square roots, order of operations, logic problems, graphing, and geometric shapes. Advanced math students will build and strengthen skills in Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. An individualized curriculum is determined by a pre-test at the beginning of camp.
Reading
3 Trimesters
Enhance your enjoyment of and create a love for reading. Be exposed to the best of children’s literature. Increase vocabulary, comprehension, and oral reading skills through creative use of books and materials.
Reading for Enjoyment
1 Trimester
This new class is for campers who wish to have quiet time to read. An instructor will be available to assist campers with choosing reading material. A camper may also bring required reading for the school year to read independently. This 2-week class does not require parent permission to enroll or drop. The reading patch is for the “Reading” class.
Writing Composition
3 Trimesters
Designed for campers in middle school. Emphasis is placed on formulating and organizing five-paragraph essays; experimenting with creative writing, poems, and short stories; and utilizing the skills that contribute to clear, focused writing.
American Indian Arts
American Indian Crafts

Create American Indian crafts including Ojos, painted shields, beaded bracelets, necklaces, and rings.
American Indian Culture

Delve into the history, lifestyles, sign language, crafts, and lore of the American Indian. Available only by invitation to returning campers who have earned the Indian Dance patch and two bars.
American Indian Dance

One of the most unique activities in Woodcraft! Learn basic steps of Indian dancing and participate in weekly Council Fires. Campers must take the class for four weeks to be eligible to be considered for a patch/bar.
Aquatics
C Swimming
Length varies
Campers who do not successfully complete the required swim test at the beginning of the summer will be required to take this class until that requirement if fulfilled. Campers must pass the required “C” swim prior to enrolling in any other water course. Campers who meet the requirements during the trimester do not have to re-enroll the next trimester.
Diving
1 trimester
Campers are taught the basics of diving and how each dive can be broken down into a series of movements, techniques, and skills. These basic movements and skills can be practiced and mastered, then put together during the dive. Campers are taught a forward, backward, and an optional dive based on their current experience all while learning in a safe environment.

Campers learn basic canoe, kayak and stand up paddle board (SUP) paddling, safety and rescue.
PADI Skin Diver (Snorkeling)
1 Trimester
Culver´s skin diving program gives campers the opportunity to meet the requirement to earn PADI´s Skin Diver certification. Skin diving is snorkeling while making breath-hold dives to observe aquatic life, up close and personal; it is also the best possible entry point into “submersive aquatics” which also include free and SCUBA diving.
Students that meet entry level swimming requirements will learn to correctly use basic skin diving equipment (mask, fins, snorkel) to competently engage in snorkeling and skin diving in any aquatic environment. This class is made up of skills development days in shallow water, followed by skills development days in water too deep in which to stand, finished by guided practice; all complemented with some classroom time to introduce skills and the underwater environment across multiple ecosystems with a focus on marine conservation.
Sailing

Become a proficient sailor. Instruction in beginning, intermediate, and advanced sailing. Program covers safety, proper sail trim, racing, and rescue.
Swimming

Campers are offered swim lessons and will be placed in the following groups based on their skill level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Competitive Swimming. Based on their current experience each level is to provide guidance and basic instruction. However, each swimmer is different and we encourage all swimmers to develop their skills at their own pace and comfort while learning in a safe environment. Some swimmers will require more training in basic skills while other swimmers are ready to learn more advanced skills.
Water Safety

Beavers/Cardinals Eligible
Campers are taught basic water safety education so every camper will have the knowledge and understanding of what they need to recognize any potential risks posed by aquatic environments and activities. This class also teaches them strategies that they can use to lower those risks. Water safety education also teaches personal survival and water rescue skills, which can improve the chances for a positive outcome should an aquatic emergency occur.
Water Ski

Available to the first 180 requests. Beginning, intermediate and advanced levels of slalom and other skiing techniques are taught.
Equitation
Equitation Advanced
1 Trimester, double class period
Available to 12 advanced riders. A riding test during the opening weekend of camp determines placement in the advanced class. Required ASTM / SEI approved English riding helmet, with chin strap, riding breeches, and full-length English riding boots (Black or Brown). English style rubber riding boots are acceptable, as well as paddock boots and ½ chaps. Helmets, breeches, and limited sizes of rubber riding boots are available for purchase on campus. It is strongly recommended that students bring boots from home if they plan to tryout for this level of riding. Weight limit is 235 pounds dressed.
Equitation Basic
1 Trimester, double class period
Available to the first 60 requests. This class is designed for Beavers and Cardinals. Cubs and Butterflies may enroll if the prerequisite of Equitation Foundation has been completed. Beginning riders learn through individualized instruction about grooming horses, safety protocols, equine management, and basic equitation arts. Helmets, breeches, and limited sizes of rubber riding boots are available for purchase on campus. Weight limit is 235 pounds dressed.

Equitation Foundation

Butterflies and Cubs Eligible
An introduction for those with no previous experience. A mechanical horse (Equicizer) will be used to mimic the
movement of a real horse. The rider will get a feel for riding and build confidence before transitioning to a live horse. ASTM / SEI Helmet required.

purchase the riding equipment until the start of camp.

Air Rifle

Learn fundamental safety rules and positions of basic riflery using air rifles.
Archery

Advanced classes available
Learn general safety rules, proper shooting technique, and Woodcraft Camp’s own archery rituals and traditions. Recurve bows of various weights are used. Personal bows may be used except in competition.
Chess

Stimulate the mind! The beginning game, middle game, and end game all require strategic thinking by association, planning ahead, and self-control.
Cross Country
Recommended for campers who love to run distances. This is also a great class to explore Culver’s natural beauty.

Get acquainted with this age-old art. Learn the fundamental techniques of fencing, including the use of foil and basic fencing positions.

Learn the proper methods of fitness and circuit weight training in our Steinbrenner Fitness Center. No free weights.
Football Skills and Development

Designed to prepare campers for fall football season, this class is focused on footwork and agility drills.
Golf

Basic, Intermediate and Advanced classes available
Basic: Learn and practice proper stance, grip, and swing fundamentals in group lessons using SNAG Golf method. Equipment provided.
Intermediate: Group instruction on enhancing existing chip, pitch, putting and driving fundamentals with limited play on the academy golf course. Equipment provided.
Advanced: Focuses on extensive academy course play and stroke and course management. Must demonstrate previous golf proficiency. Golf shoes and a personal set of clubs are required. Offered as a double period.
Ice Skating

Learn fundamentals and improve skating abilities. Skates are available for use, but campers are welcome to use their own skates.
Pickleball

Receive instruction in proper grip, forehand, backhand, volley, serve, footwork, contact point, follow-through, rules, and etiquette. Organized by skill level. Personal racquets are encouraged.
Ping Pong

Campers will develop skills and strategies in playing ping pong, one of the most popular activities at Woodcraft.
Tennis

Basic: Receive instruction in proper grip, forehand, backhand, volley, serve, footwork, contact point, follow-through, rules, and etiquette. Organized by skill level. Personal racquets are encouraged.
Advanced: Instruction emphasizes drills requiring strong forehand, backhand, volleys and service skills. Typically, players have strong tennis background prior to attending camp. Personal racquets are required.

English for International Students /Beginner

Designed for international campers who have limited English language skills, students will learn English vocabulary and grammar which will enhance their communication skills.

Designed for international campers who are conversational in English and wish to enhance their written and oral communication skills. Campers who sign up for this course may be moved to the beginning level based on the recommendation of the instructor.

This class is designed to be a fun, interactive experience for any Cardinal or Beaver interested in the fundamentals of how airplanes work and the concept of basic navigation. In addition to classroom instruction, students will receive an introductory lesson in one of Culver’s state-of-the-art flight simulators. Though not required, students are encouraged to sign up for a “Discovery Flight” in a Cessna 172 with Culver's affiliate flight school. There is no fee associated with the Basic Aviation course, however, Discovery Flights must be purchased directly from the flight school for an additional fee. Fashion Design

In Fashion Design class campers will learn to design, create and develop fashion statement pieces. After designs are finished campers will participate in a fashion show.
Military Leadership

The Military Leadership course centers around the concepts of what a leader must Be, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, campers will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skill and confidence to lead well.

Complementing the Drum & Bugle Corps is the Woodcraft Band, open to all Woodcrafters who play instruments; students should bring their instruments to camp. There is a patch available for those who participate, work hard, and perform in the final concert. There are a limited number of loaner flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, and baritone horns available for band members and those taking instrument classes. Offered 2nd term only.
Bugle Lessons

Camp Play

Develop performance skills and participate in the Camp Play. Auditions are held the first weekend of camp.
Camp Play Theatre Tech

Learn fundamentals of backstage technique, set design, construction, lighting, sound, and other special effects used in theater. Participate in the staging and production of the annual camp play.

All Beavers in the Drum & Bugle Corps are required to enroll in the D&B course. Cubs and Butterflies are not eligible for membership in the Drum & Bugle Corps but may enroll in instrument classes or concert band. Cardinals who meet the above requirements to be in the D & B will march with the unit, but still function as a member of their home Cardinal Unit, Wing 1, Wing 2 or Wing 3.

Fundamentals of Cuisine

Are you a young FOODIE? Surprise your family and friends at home by preparing an entire, healthy meal for them! In this course, you will learn some basic knife skills and kitchen safety, how to plan an entire meal and best of all, you will learn to cook (and EAT), wonderful and varied dishes such as crepes, chilaquiles and fun appetizers that you can make at home. You will need a
curious mind, an attentive ear and a small notebook and pen or pencil to record recipes and valuable kitchen tips.

Explore your interest in theater and drama through instruction and practice in acting techniques.
Nature Studies
Aquatic Biology
1 trimester
Learn about the water ecosystem that makes up Cardinal Creek and Lake Maxinkuckee. Capture frogs, crawfish, minnows, turtles, and water striders. Help prepare the Nature Center aquarium and observe the interaction of the inhabitants. Test water quality and learn what conditions make the creek such a species-rich environment.
Astronomy
1 trimester
Explore the night skies over Woodcraft, learn about our solar system, and find out how much you would weigh on Jupiter. Spend time in our observatory and use the portable telescopes to see the rings of Saturn or count the moons of Jupiter.
Basic Nature
1 trimester
Explore the different areas available in the Nature Department and have some fun too. Learn about trees and plants, take a trip to Cardinal Creek and chase a frog, bird watch, act out the story of a constellation Native Americans call the Big Bear, and much more.
Birds
1 trimester
Bird watchers, come join us as we find out secrets such as why most birds fly but some don't, how feathers make the well-dressed bird, the advantages of hollow bones, and other secrets. Experiment with different beak shapes and discover who eats what by how their beaks work. Learn why ostrich eggs are able to stand up to being set upon by such a large bird. The wonderful world of birds is opened to you.
Ecology
1 Trimester
A study of the world around us and how the different environments interact to make the world we know. Conduct water and soil quality experiments to check the health of our camp, make a model of a water filtration system with everyday items, learn about using worms to recycle kitchen compost, explore recycling methods, and learn what you can do at home.
Geology
1 Trimester
Identify rocks and minerals, make a fake geode, grow crystals, and make an erupting volcano model. Be a rock and fossil hunter, learn about the Ice Age that covered this area just a short 10,000 years ago, and hear about the mastodon bones found just a few miles from Woodcraft in 2007.
Insects
1 trimester
If it has six legs, multiple eyes, three body segments, and creeps, crawls, or flies it’s an insect! As one of the most diverse groups of animals on Earth, with over 650,000 identified so far, we can’t find them all but we can learn a lot about the ones we do see. Capture, identify, then release insects, find out why some are more beneficial than others and what we can do to make use of them to reduce our use of pesticides in our world.
Plants

Identify beneficial and harmful plants; learn how to avoid the camper’s enemy, poison ivy, and why it makes us itch. Explore the uses of different plants, make dye from plant materials and tie-dye a T-shirt. Find out what modern medicines are derived from plants.
Reptiles Amphibians
1 trimester
Cold-blooded, scaly skin, claws on paws (if they have paws), may be venomous? Sounds like a reptile. Cold-blooded, smooth skin, no claws on their paws, may be venomous but less likely? Must be an amphibian! Explore the wonderful world of Reptiles and Amphibians! Help catch frogs, toads, and turtles to display in the Nature Center aquariums for the summer. Participate in the return to the wild at the end of camp.
Trees

Wander Woodcraft Camp and identify trees by leaf shape, type of bark, flowers, and fruits. Discover all the uses of trees and the benefits they bring to us and other living things. Learn about making dyes and root beer from tree parts, make leaf art.
Scouting
Boy Scouts

Top Notch available
Culver’s Troop 261 (Boy Scouts of America) offers boys 11 years and older who wish to join, or who are members of a Troop at home, the chance to advance in rank and earn merit badges. Current Boys Scout members from home troops may register for a DUAL membership once in class. Current Boy Scouts are also encouraged to bring their merit badge blue card(s) signed by their scoutmaster detailing the badges the scout would like to achieve. All boys registered for Scouting classes will receive an individualized program to help promote their skills merit badges and advancement. Culver Troop 261 will send home a record of completed or partial merit badges and advancement while at Woodcraft.
Campcraft Basics

Open to boys and girls. Learn basic outdoor skills including fire-building, knot-tying, orienteering, cooking, hiking, first aid and more. Participants will also attend an overnight camping with peers in which they cook their own meals, participate in activities, eat s’mores, and sleep in tents. Emphasis will also be placed on youth leadership and responsibility in concordance with scouting tradition.
Girl Scouts

Culver’s Troop 00303 (Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana Michiana) offers the Journey Program and badges where girls can learn about a variety of leadership and scouting skills. Girls may also begin or continue to work on their Bronze, Silver, and Gold Girl Scout Awards while at camp.

Campers will learn the fundamentals of lacrosse through drills and play. Limited equipment will be available, so campers should bring their lacrosse equipment to camp.
Lacrosse Basic: Learn the fundamentals of play. Sticks and padding are provided or brought from home.
Lacrosse Advanced: A full-contact class for advanced campers. Personal helmet, shoulder and elbow pads, mouth guard, gloves and stick required.

Algebra 1 (ALEKS)

This course provides standards-based coverage of Algebra 1 and prerequisites but does not provide extensive coverage of non-algebra mathematics topics, such as probability, statistics, and geometry.
Algebra 2 Concepts

For those students who would like a head start in Algebra 2 or a review of the course. Covers advanced algebraic concepts. Individual learning levels are accommodated. Students are asked to bring a TI 83/+ calculator from home.
Coding
1 trimester
Building with technology. We would build innovative solutions to everyday problems. We would incorporate simple coding logic into this class with the goal of building through technology.
College Application Essay Writing

A course that instructs the student in how to effectively write a number of essays that can be used when applying to colleges: how to sell yourself, how to identify your strengths and highlight them in your writing, and how to structure this kind of an essay to get maximum attention from the college admissions office.
Color Me Culver

Explore the benefits of putting pencil (or crayons) to paper while relaxing with a creative accomplishment.
Creative Writing

Use your imagination to create short stories, one act plays, various forms of poetry, and other written work.
English for Int'l Students

Designed for campers who have limited ability to speak English. The curriculum will include vocabulary which will help the camper adjust to living in the United States.
Etiquette

Ever wonder how to introduce someone, or what to do with your other hand at the dinner table? Learning appropriate manners can increase your confidence and put you at ease in social situations. Treating others with kindness and respect is an indicator of maturity and readiness for both college and careers.
Games of Strategy

Polish skills in traditional board games and learn new games. Match wits and powers of deduction with and against your classmates.
Geometry Concepts
3 trimesters
An individualized program designed to accommodate all levels, from introductory to those who have completed a geometry class.
Grammar & Vocabulary
1 Trimester
Review principles of English grammar, usage and correct punctuation. This course will provide a close look at root words and word parts to enhance vocabulary skills. Recommended for students below their sophomore year in high school.
Independent Study
1 trimester
This is a class designed for the student who has academic work assigned from home to do over the summer. As a two-week course, it will provide focused study time during the class day. All students placed in the independent study will be required to show their instructor their lesson plans or assignments on the first day of class.
Journalism/Vedette

A two-week course introducing newspaper writing, feature and sports writing, and interviewing. Work will be published in the Vedette, the Culver Summer Schools & Camps newspaper.
Public Speaking
1 trimester
Teaches effective skills and techniques for successful experiences speaking in public. While the main focus is in the presentation, basic speech writing skills are also covered. A speech contest is held at the end of the summer.
Robotics
1 trimester
Whether you are a novice or a well-experienced robotics designer, this course will give you better insight and knowledge about the world of robotics. Use the engineering design process to design and construct robots using the VEX EDR platform. Learn how to program robots for joystick driving and autonomous driving using sensors in ROBOTC for a friendly competition.
SAT Prep - English
2 trimesters
An analysis of standardized tests in English, emphasizing the SAT. Focus on vocabulary, diction, sentence structure, and comprehension. Literary passages are analyzed. Practice tests are administered and test taking techniques are covered. Recommended for those entering the sophomore or junior year in high school.
SAT Prep - Math
2 trimesters
An analysis of standardized math exams. Focus on required math skills. Practice taking the math segments of the SAT exam. Must have completed a year of both algebra and geometry. Recommended for those entering the sophomore or junior year in high school.
Spanish

Brush up on basic Spanish vocabulary and understanding simple phrases.
Summer Reading

Spend some time this summer reading and discussing some of the most well-known works of Literature.
Aviation
Aviation

Advanced classes available
Required for all Aviation unit students, available elective for Naval, Troop and Girls. Students will be taught ground, simulator and flight instruction by Certificated Flight Instructors from our affiliate flight school. Students who sign up for the aviation course will be required to select a training program from a variety of classroom, simulator and flight instruction packages offered by Culver’s affiliate flight school. These training packages will be an additional charge to the camp tuition. Parents must contract flight instruction directly with the affiliate flight school.
Please note that if the aviation course is requested, important information regarding the process to register with the flight school will be sent to parents from the email address flyculver@culver.org. A student is not officially signed up for the Aviation program until they finalize their training packages with the flight school.
Note for international families: To be enrolled in the Aviation curriculum, your camper MUST have proof of U.S. Citizenship, or proof of dual U.S. Citizenship, or clearance for flight training from TSA (the United States Transportation Security Administration). Getting TSA clearance is a time-consuming process that should be started as soon as possible to ensure your camper is eligible for flight instruction. Information regarding the application for TSA clearance will be provided by the affiliate flight school.
Horsemanship

Beginning, intermediate and advanced classes available
Required for all boys assigned to Troop and all girls assigned to Deck 7. This class is also available as an elective for Naval, Aviation, Band, and Girls. Students are placed in Beginning, intermediate, or advanced categories at the start of the session. Instruction is provided at the individuals level of proficiency. Required ASTM / SEI approved riding helmet with chin strap, riding breeches, one pair full length black English riding boots may be brought from home or purchased on campus up to size 12. It is recommended that girls bring boots from homes or purchase before arrival. Culver does not carry a supply of riding boots in women’s sizes. Boys and Girls may bring black paddock boots and leather ½ chaps that can be polished. Suede ½ chaps, and Rubber boots are not acceptable. Weight limit of 235 pounds dressed.
There is no class fee to participate in the Horsemanship class, however, the purchase of additional equipment is required.
Trick Riding
3 Trimesters, double period
Riding horses without the use of stirrups in specially designed saddles, Individuals learn balance and agility as used by the cavalry in the tradition of the Cossacks and Native Americans. Only students registered for Horsemanship may take Trick Riding. Weight limit of 235 pounds dressed.
There is no class fee to participate in the Trick Riding class, however, the purchase of additional equipment is required. (Sweat pants, Tee shirt, gym shoes)

Third Class Leadership Course

Every first year Upper School student takes this course. Topics include: The importance of knowing the people of the community, behaviors of a Strong Leader—Learning, taking care of yourself and taking care of the unit – growth mindset, and being the first follower.
Second Class Leadership Course
1 Trimester
All second year students take this leadership course during the 1st trimester. Topics include: the importance of knowing the people on your team, behaviors of a Strong Leader—Evaluating, the importance of team—understanding the development of a unit, fostering Collaboration—Humility, Curiosity, and Risk-Taking.
First Class Leadership Course
1 Trimester
All third-year students take this leadership course during the 1st trimester. Topics include: The importance of knowing the people you lead, Behaviors of a Strong Leader—Modeling, The Power of “Do as I do” versus “Do as I say.”, Me and the Unit—Making Tough Decisions.
Frontline Leadership
1 Trimester, offered third trimesters only
Open to 1st and 2nd class students. Frontline leaders are responsible for the day-to-day leadership at Culver. They are critical to the success of each student and the Units/Battalions/Squadron/Regiment. Effective leaders understand the behaviors, and attitudes needed for effective leadership. Students in this course will learn and practice the skills they need to coach, provide feedback, initiate change, and manage conflict in their role as Frontline leaders at Culver and at home.
Class is limited to 12 students.
Team Leadership

Prerequisite: Frontline Leadership
Open to 1st and 2nd class campers. This course builds upon the skills learned in Frontline Leadership. An effective team leader has a variety of traits and characteristics that encourage team members to follow. Team leaders consistently demonstrate certain qualities, behaviors, and skills that inspire the trust and respect of the team and stimulate positive activity in the Units/Battalions/Squadron/Regiment. Students in this course will learn the skills needed for building team involvement and engagement.

Behind The Scenes Look at Technical Theater

Being on stage may garner applause, but it’s what happens behind the scenes that truly creates magic in theatre. During this two-week course students will be introduced to stage lighting and sound and learn how they all connect to create one magnificent production. No experience required…this class is for those interested in what happens behind the scenes to put on a successful performance.
Dance

Includes modern, ballet, and jazz, emphasizing body conditioning. Learn elements of efficient movement and correct body alignment. Excerpts from several choreographic styles are developed. Culminates with an informal sharing of repertory selections and student compositions.
Dance for Athletes

This coed class stresses injury prevention techniques through proper warm-up and stretching. Balance, flexibility, agility, and timing are emphasized.
Digital Photography
1 trimester
In this course, students will learn the essential skills of Digital Photography. Students will practice photographic composition, color theory, and digital image processing. The work of contemporary photographers, ideas, and trends specific to color photography, and an introduction to critical methods will complement this study. Students are encouraged to bring a digital camera, but several cameras are available for student use.
Foundations of Ceramics

Students in Foundations of Ceramics will get their hands dirty as they learn about the properties of clay and construction methods to create functional and/or sculptural works of art. The focus will be on pinch, coil, slab, and basic wheel throwing techniques. Various glaze and surface decoration techniques for finishing work will be introduced.
Foundations of Drawing and Painting
1 trimester
Students in Foundations of Drawing and Painting will learn concepts, methods, and techniques of perceptual drawing and painting. The focus will be on line, value, and color in varying combinations as essential features of pictorial structure. Subject matter includes still life, landscape, architecture, copies of works from old and modern masters, and historic plaster casts. Through various studies and exercises using pencil, charcoal, watercolor, and acrylic paint, students acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for increasingly challenging assignments.
Foundations of Photography
1 trimester
Students in Foundations of Photography will learn the fundamental skills required to record light as an image. Students will be expected to actively take photographs and make prints, as well as participate in critiques, discussions and other class activities.
Garage Band

Ever dream of being in a Rock & Roll band? In this class, you will get together with other students to form your own musical combos. Each combo will perform at least once during the summer. The class is open to singers and instrumentalists of any kind.
Guitar

This is a non-performing class for beginning guitarists. The course will teach basic major and minor chord scales. Bring your guitar from home.
Instrument

All music will be covered from many different eras, all the way back from classical music to today!
One Act Plays

Write a short , one act play using dialogue, actors, staging, costumes etc. and see your play be part of a One Act Play Festival at the end of summer.

A Introduction to Alfred Hitchcock
The enormous scope of Alfred Hitchcock’s work remains unrivaled by any other movie director, past or present. This summer, through screenings and discussions, students will explore the legacy of the dark and mysterious world of one of film’s most revered and influential filmmakers. The class will begin with an introduction to film analysis—how do we talk about film, genre, what makes a good scene—and will then screen five of Hitchcock’s most renowned works “Shadow of a Doubt,” “Rear Window,” “Vertigo,” “Psycho” and “The Birds.”
Theater Tech

Learn fundamentals of backstage technique, set design, construction, lighting, sound, and other special effects used in theater. Participate in the staging and production of the annual camp play.
Required: One set of old clothes for splattered paints.
Naval
Basic Sailing & Seamanship
3 trimesters, double period
For all students who have not yet earned a Culver Skipper Card. Students learn how to handle a boat under oar, sail a variety of sailboats in light to moderate winds, operate a boat safely by following the nautical rules of the road, communicate using semaphore and International Code flags and tie eight common nautical knots. Upon recommendation of the instructor, students with prior sailing experience may be moved to Small Boat Sailing and Seamanship.
Coastal Navigation
3 trimesters, single period
If you want to sail anywhere in the world without a captain this is the course for you. Open to any 3rd-year student (1st classman) who has completed two summers of sailing class. Students learn traditional navigation techniques. This is a class with regular written exams and a final exam. Students will earn a US Sailing Coastal Navigation Certification. Class is limited to 10 students per class period. Class Fee is $47 for instructional materials and includes a one-year membership in US Sail
Keelboat Sailing & Seamanship
3 trimesters, double period
Open to 3rd-year students who earned their US Sailing Small Boat Certification. The Basic Keelboat graduate will successfully demonstrate the ability to responsibly skipper and crew a Capri 22 keelboat in light to moderate wind and sea conditions. Students work toward earning a US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification. Class is limited to 30 students per class period. The class Fee is $47 for instructional materials and includes a one-year membership in US Sailing.
Small Boat Sailing & Seamanship / Performance Sailing
3 trimesters, double period
Open to 2nd and 3rd-year students who have earned their Culver Skipper Card, or 1st-year students via a qualifying process in week 1. Small Boat Sailing builds on the skills taught in Basic Sailing and Seamanship. Students learn how to rig and sail a variety of high-performance sailboats in light and heavy winds. Students work toward earning a US Sailing Small Boat Certification. Performance Sailing is open to sailors via a qualifying process in week 1. Performance sailing teaches advanced sailing techniques including trapeze, spinnaker, advanced boat speed, and racing. Students wishing to qualify for Performance Sailing must take the Small Boat class periods 3-4 or 5-6.
Stand-Up Paddle Boarding
1 trimester, single period
Students learn the fundamentals of paddle boarding in a safe and fun environment. Learning includes safety rules, board parts, board balance, paddling techniques, how to turn and steer the board, maintenance, and self-rescue. This class DOES NOT meet the sailing requirement for Naval School Midshipman. Each class is limited to a maximum of 8 students.

Competitive Canoeing is a new athletic class uniquely designed by top Culver Canoe Team racers. Students will have fun learning unique power paddling strokes, training hard and speed sprinting in the newest and fastest racing canoes on Lake Max. Students will also be introduced to “high-kneel” paddling techniques used in Olympic Canoe Sprint racing events.

Elite Sports Training: Myths, Foundations & Strategies

Ever wonder how high level athletes train? Or what it takes to compete on the highest stage? This is a hybrid class with both classroom discussion and on field/weight room activity. We will explore the major myths that lead athletes astray, and introduce tested and scientifically backed methods of athletic improvement.
Fencing

Beginner and Advanced classes available
Beginner: Introduces the combat sport of Modern Olympic Fencing. All three weapons are introduced: foil, epee, and saber. Students will focus on core skills, strategies, and rules of fencing. No experience is necessary.
Advanced: Did you know that Culver Academies has a nationally ranked fencing program? This high-intensity class covers footwork, blade techniques, bout preparation, and in-bout game planning. This class provides group training for the fencer who wants to improve his/her competition skills. Open bouting is offered. This class is for students with 2+ years of fencing experience.

Culver is pleased to introduce a new golf curriculum developed by Joe Bosco, who is recognized by Golf Digest, Sports Illustrated, Golf Magazine and GolfWeek, as one of the top golf teacher-coaches in the country and the author of “Real Golf, Taking Your Best Game to the Course.” Taught at Culver’s beautifully restored 1928 golf course and new practice facility this double CP class is for golfers ready to take their game to the next level. Joe Bosco’s curriculum provides context-rich learning –delivered in fun forms of playing golf games on and off the golf course and incorporates mental, physical technique, coordination and fitness, as well as emotional training. Culver has golf clubs, but campers are welcome to bring clubs from home if they prefer.
Ice Hockey

Instruction and practice of fundamentals as applied to game situations. Open to all ability levels. Required ice skates, full set of protective equipment including helmet/mask, mouth guard, shoulder pads, elbow pads, pants, protective cup, shin pads, socks, and a jersey to be brought from home.
Ice Skating

Improve skating abilities or learn fundamentals, skates are available, but personal skates are encouraged.
Indoor Racquet Sports

Includes introduction to racquetball, ping pong, squash and wallyball. Fundamentals and techniques are emphasized.
Kickball

Kickball is a team sport, similar to baseball. As in baseball, one team tries to score by having its players return a ball from home base to the field and then circle the bases, while the other team tries to stop them by tagging them "out" with the ball before they can return to the home base.
Lacrosse

Dazzle your coach by using your stick to pass, catch, cradle, and shoot with both hands. Learn new skills or polish your existing ones as you practice drills and fast breaks. Students must bring their own pads and desired equipment from home.
Lifeguard Training

An American Red Cross program open to students age 15 or older. A grade of “excellent” in this activity will result in American Red Cross Certification and qualify students for waterfront employment.

Shotgun - Beginning (Trap)

Shotgun - Advanced (Skeet)
Class Fee: $275, 1 trimester
For students with prior Skeet or Trap experience that want to work on advancing their skills in this popular marksmanship activity. Students MUST have taken trap shooting while at Culver to be eligible for Skeet Must be 13 years or older and able to lift a seven to nine pound shotgun. Charged for ammunition and clay birds.
Soccer

Focuses on techniques such as ball control, kicking form, dribbling, passing, and goalkeeping.
Swim Skills

Basic swim skills taught in a supportive environment for the novice swimmers. Required for those who do not pass the swim test. An elective for those who wish to learn and improve technique.
Swimming

Sharpen competitive skills. Practice sprint and distance.
Tennis

Instruction in beginning, intermediate, and advanced tennis. Beginners and intermediates receive instruction in fundamentals. Advanced learn tournament competition and receive specialized instruction. Personal racquet suggested.

Practice running and field events other than pole vault, discus, javelin, and hammer.
Traditional American Sports

This class offers a sampling of baseball, dodge ball, football, and softball played on a rotating basis to provide exposure to the big four in U.S. team sports.
Ultimate Frisbee
1 trimester
Ultimate is a noncontact, fast paced field sport played with two teams of seven. The object is to throw a frisbee up the field from teammate to teammate until it’s caught in the opponent’s endzone. The game combines elements from other sports – the running of soccer, the jumping, pivoting, passing and continual turnovers from offense to defense of basketball, and the long bombs into the endzone of football. It’s played year-round.
Volleyball

Emphasis on fundamentals and scrimmage.
Varsity Volleyball- For the student who already plays on his or her high school volleyball team. Classes are run as a typical practice might be: fast-paced, rigorous, and demanding. Sign up for this class if you are on your school’s varsity or JV volleyball team.
Water Skiing

Outstanding instruction for both beginners and advanced water skiers. Students can ski, wakeboard, wake skate, or kneeboard on the waters of Lake Maxinkuckee.
Whiffleball

Do you enjoy the game of baseball, but don't have equipment or the field to play. Then consider playing the game seen on playgrounds around the world. This whiffleball provides the opportunity to relive some of those memories.
Wrestling

Students will learn the fundamentals of wrestling, both as a sport and a method of self-defense. They should leave this class with a foundation to build upon as well as overall improved athleticism. They will:
