Bird Sanctuary

Calling the approximately 200 acres of marsh and woodlands a Bird Sanctuary is a bit of a misnomer. The combination of marsh, forest and stream environments is a habitat for all sorts of wildlife besides birds.

This quiet section of Culver’s campus started as an intentionally designed area, complete with a pond created by an artificial dam and a giant cage to house different species of birds. The dam broke during a storm in the 1980s, and the area was left in its natural, marshy state ever since. The cage is still there. While it no longer holds birds, it still is a pleasant and curious waypoint that hikers can use to orient themselves within the preserve.

A hike through at any time of the year shows off the natural beauty of northern Indiana.
