Horsemanship School

The School of Horsemanship is the summer version of the renowned Black Horse Troop that has been participating in Presidential Inaugural Parades since 1913. The Troop offers a progressive curriculum designed to develop character and leadership while learning to control and manage the horse.

The Troop is available to boys ages 14 to 17. Troopers are required to take a double-period horsemanship class for the entire six weeks. The same equestrian courses are available to all other Upper School boys and girls as electives.

Classes

  • Basic Equitation
  • Intermediate Equitation
  • Advanced Equitation
  • Rough Riding

Facilities

Troopers take advantage of world-class equine facilities at Culver, such as the state-of-the-art Robert C. Vaughn Stable and the Jud Little Riding Hall. There are several paddocks where the horses are exercised, and plenty of interesting trails to explore.

Troop Hike

The summer highlight is always the three-day Troop Hike where the Troopers bivouac on a large expanse of Culver-owned property north of the main campus. Living in tents, cooking outside, and learning how to properly care for their horses makes for an exciting and educational experience. The Troopers spend the first day learning about cavalry tactics and studying a historical battle selected by the instructors. The next day, the Troop reenacts the battle on horseback, hoping to correct any mistakes they believe were made from the original conflict.
