Boys Golf

The CMA golf program is one of the oldest varsity programs and dates back to the opening of the Academy's historic Langford-Moreau designed golf course in the late 1920's. Over the years, the program has developed a rich history and tradition and, since joining the IHSAA in the late 1970's,  has garnered three Sectional Championships, two Regional Championships, four trips to the State Finals, and numerous top-20 state rankings. In addition, the program has achieved some outstanding individual success stories. Doug Fischesser, a 1970 graduate, went on to become runnerup in the USGA Amateur Championship. Barry Sewell earned All-State honors in 1993 and became the first Culver athlete to earn an IHSAA state championship; he went on to play collegiately at Oklahoma City and professionally on the Nike Tour. Herbie Champlin and Rob Davidge (CMA '02) also earned All-State honors, Davidge by virtue of his 3rd place finish in the 2001 state finals.

The philosophy of the program from its incipient stages has been two-fold: to teach beginners the skills that will last them a lifetime, and to prepare more experienced players for interscholastic competition. We seldom cut players from the squad. There are players who are not ready for competitive golf when they first arrive at Culver, whom we teach the fundamentals and endeavor to instill a passion for the game. Our philosophy is not to put a player on the course before he is prepared to handle both the physical and mental rigors of competitive golf.

While some players are getting their first serious exposure to the sport, there are others whom we are preparing for competitive golf. We stress to our players the importance of playing competitive golf and working hard over the summer. We also encourage them to attend a golf camp or to work with a teaching professional. With the success the program has experienced over the years, it's clear that many have heeded our exhortations.

As much as the program strives for success on the course, developing and nurturing character is no less a part of our mission. If the core values of the Academy are Wisdom, Justice, Courage, and Moderation, they must also be the guiding principles of our program. We want players who make good decisions on the course, who play by the rules, who learn to deal with adversity, and who are in control of their emotions. We want a program in which how the boys play the game is every bit as important as the scores they shoot..The Spirt of Culver, a poem written and included in the June 5, 1913 commencement address by Chicago newspaperman S.E. Kiser, expresses the philosophy of the CMA Golf program:

"The hope to win, the zeal to dare, Contempt for what is base and mean; Pride in achievement that is fair And high regard for what is clean. The strength that is in brotherhood, The courage that proclaims success; The will to strive for what is good, And first and always, manliness." S.E. Kiser
