Computer Science & Engineering

Students can participate with our robotics team as an after-school activity. Culver competes in Vex Robotics Competitions around the state. Each year, Vex releases a brand new game with unique challenges and constraints for students to design, build, and program a robot to play. Students learn the engineering design process, note-booking skills, how to use computer aided design (CAD) tools, and how to write Python computer code. The students are organized into four smaller groups, with each group making their own robots. Most of the designing and building takes place in the fall with most of the tournaments, as well as the Vex World Championships, taking place in early spring.

Students of all abilities use this club to explore Computer Science fields. Often the members use this time to learn about CS, especially those who cannot fit CS courses into their schedule. We also have members who want to work on projects that are beyond the scope of the current CS classes.

In the Pigott Center Makerspace, students have access to two different types of 3D printing technology, a laser cutter and engraver, and a vinyl cutter. Several different classes including Honors Engineering and 3D Art regularly use the equipment as part of their class. Students also have the opportunity to come in and get certified to use the equipment on their own time for their own projects and interests. Throughout the year students who have been certified to use the equipment help to host open houses for the community to come in and learn to make small projects like 3D printed snowflakes, custom jewelry boxes, or their own stickers
