Computer Science & Engineering

This introductory course exposes students to current cybersecurity concerns, both for them as individuals and larger threats. They will learn how the Internet works and what parts make them most susceptible to cybersecurity threats. They will also get the opportunity to learn ways to keep their data safe and current strategies in the field.

Prerequisite: Algebra I

This introductory course develops an understanding of the relationships between design, logical reasoning, and problem solving. Students will learn the basics of coding; sequencing, selection, and iteration while learning the syntax of Python 3. They will create interactive programs that could include art, music, and games. No prior knowledge of programming is required.

Prerequisites: Foundations of Programming: Python

This course will offer a basic overview of the Java language while reviewing basic programming skills at the same time. Students will learn the syntax of Java as they work with and eventually build their own game. The structure of the course is such that students at any grade level or computing level can find areas of challenge and progress.

Prerequisite: Foundations of Programming: Python

Computer Scientists and Engineers make the world a better place by designing solutions to authentic problems. In this course, students will be introduced to engineering design and computational thinking while solving human-centered, technically challenging. In the first term, students will apply features of Python to design programs that meet the needs of graphical artists and physical therapists. In the second term, projects will cover mechanical, electrical, and biomedical engineering and asks the students to build devices as well as code programs for those devices.

Prerequisite: Applications of Python I

This course will build on the student’s previous Python knowledge as they learn more advanced topics within the language such as data structures, classes, and using Python libraries. Students will be asked to work through projects like a game, data visualization, web application, or something in the mechatronics field as they learn more about the language.

2 term, solid, 2 credit

Prerequisite: Applications of Java

This self-paced course will allow students to explore multiple areas within the Java language, some of which include object-oriented programming, algorithms, and fundamental data structures. Students will work through resources and activities provided, culminating in a project at the end of each major section. In addition to learning Java, students will be actively reflecting on and revising how they work through the material as well as, practicing habits of a professional programmer. For students interested in taking the AP CS A exam, the course will give them the opportunity to cover the material before the test date.

Prerequisites: Applications of Java II or Applications of Python II

The Honors Seminar in Computer Science program is for students who have demonstrated exceptional ability and interest in Computer Science and who are willing to pursue a higher level of achievement. Students must demonstrate their abilities and interests by performing well in Applications of Java II or Applications of Python II. Honors project candidates will select topics to study, to be approved by the Computer Science and Engineering department. They will then be given time in class over two terms to develop their research topic or real-world application and learn new content necessary for their projects. Each candidate will write a complete technical report of their findings, for presentation to a forum including faculty members and fellow students.

In this term-long experience, students will learn the engineering design process through two project-based challenges. Projects may come from fields of civil, mechanical, chemical, electrical, and aerospace engineering. This course is designed specifically with the goal of sparking a passion for engineering, computational thinking, and problem-solving that will serve all students no matter what their future career goals may be.

Prerequisite: Algebra II

This course will teach students the engineering design process and allow them to get hands on experience in four engineering disciplines: Environmental, Aeronautical, Biomedical, and Mechatronics.  Students will combine science and math skills to design and build a custom windmill, a prototype heart valve, and a robot that can navigate on its own, as well as compete in a balsa wood glider competition. Students will learn how to distinguish good designs from poor designs and be able to evaluate information for relevancy to their project.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Applications of Engineering I

Applications of Engineering II is a high-challenge course where each student team will apply their knowledge of science, engineering, and mathematics to identify and solve a problem in the community. Students will use principles of biomimicry and the engineering design method to develop nature-inspired ideas and design sustainable solutions and use parametric modeling and 3D printing to create durable prototypes.

2 term, Solid

Prerequisites: Applications of Engineering I and II

The Honors Seminar in Engineering is for students who have demonstrated exceptional ability and interest in engineering. Students must demonstrate their abilities and interest by performing well in Applications of Engineering. Students will fully implement the engineering design process to solve multi-disciplinary engineering projects. Students will develop a design proposal that will meet the approval of the Computer Science and Engineering department. Students will design and build a functional prototype for testing and review. Students will develop a portfolio and present their projects to a panel of faculty members. Students are encouraged to participate in the Culver Science and Engineering Fair.
