The Woodcraft Camp Color Guard got the Culver Summer Schools & Camps season off to a strong start when they traveled to South Bend to present the colors at the Indiana League of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers annual conference.

The group of three boys and four girls presented the colors to kick off a weeklong annual conference of the group attended by State Treasurer Daniel Elliott and more than 425 clerks and treasurers from throughout Indiana. About 300 of them were on hand to see the Woodcraft Color Guard present the colors at the meeting held at the Century Center in downtown South Bend.

“The Color Guard did a fantastic job,” said Karen Heim, the league’s president. “They were very poised and mature and completed the responsibility without any practice in the room.”

Heim, who is the clerk-treasurer for the town of Culver, said she invited the Color Guard to present the colors because she wanted to feature people and places important to her. Heim and her husband have both previously worked at Culver and their daughter, Emily ’22 is a Culver Girls Academy graduate.

Trey Mosley ’19 W’16, the Woodcraft military director, said presenting the colors is an opportunity for Culver to put its best foot forward in the community.

“We want to have community outreach and have a positive impact on the communities around us,” he said.

He said it’s also good for the campers.

“Part of the leadership program we have here is not only what a camper can do in a leadership role but also get them ready for future roles such as interviewing and public speaking,” he said. “They’re learning at a young age to perform in front of a group and to uphold our standards during their performance.”
