Armorer R. Bjornstad

Shortly after I graduated from High School in Seattle, Class of 1965, I enlisted in US Navy.  I spent the next six years on active duty during the Vietnam conflict as a missile computer technician. I was sent overseas four times and got to visit many foreign cities in places like Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan and Hong Kong. I think the most memorable experience there were many) during that time was climbing to the top of Mt. Fuji in Japan. Boy was it cold! But so beautiful!

After the Navy, I worked in many places. I was a longshoreman (used to be called a stevedore in the old days) in Seattle, and electrician in the shipyards building Navy ships and also building commercial aircraft. I used to drive the big rigs on the open road. I worked in a Casino in Nevada for a while and have been a helpful hardware man at an Ace Hardware store. And of course I have been in sales and supervision.

I have been here at the Academy since 1996 and I believe this is the best job of all!  I work at Facilities during the day and keep the equipment working for the fencers during the winter. During the summer I work behind the scenes at the Council Ring for the Summer Camp. All is great fun and extremely rewarding!

Advise to all?

A good education is priceless, but it's the experience that puts it all into perspective. When new opportunities appear -- go for it!
