Women's Epee Captain Lauren Zurbrugg

Hi! My name is Lauren Zurbrugg, and I am a women’s epée co-captain. This is my third year fencing and I am a junior in CGA. I was first introduced to fencing when I took a fencing class offered at Culver’s Woodcraft Camp, the summer before my freshman year at CGA. I received runner-up at the end-of-camp tournament, and I was hooked! Fencing is a beautiful sport that requires athleticism, strategy, and emotional strength. During my freshman and sophomore fencing seasons, I qualified and competed in the Junior Olympics for fencing in Salt Lake City, UT and Columbus, OH. I learned a tremendous amount from attending these tournaments, and I hope to return this year to progress even more. Also, I have fenced in one N.A.C. (North American Championship) and attended two fencing camps at Escrime du Lac in Mishawaka, Indiana.

My mom, dad, and I live in the town of Culver.  We moved to Culver prior to my freshman year when I decided that I wanted to attend CGA and my mom accepted a position in Culver’s Development Office. Previously, I lived in Ohio, Texas, and Nebraska. I am a Batten Scholar at Culver, a member of the CGA Council, the Vedette staff, the Community Service Council, and the concert band (where I play the clarinet). I also rowed crew last spring.

My co-captain, Kaylan and I are anticipating that this year will be a “building year” for our squad, with one other returning female epeeist, Lauren Wheeler. We do, however, have quite a few athletes new to fencing on our squad this year, and hopefully, we will have a lot of fun, learn a lot, and really build our strength for next year. Go, Women’s Epée!!!
