Eagles get defensive at Triton

BOURBON — Culver Girls Academy basketball head coach Gary Christlieb looked over his team’s defensive numbers against Triton Monday night.

What he saw from his squad’s man-to-man effort added up to a 45-36 road win over the host Trojans.

“I thought our defense was stellar tonight,” Christlieb, whose team collected its third road victory in seven nights, said. “We gave up 12 points in the first quarter and kept them under 10 in each quarter the rest of the night. We kept them to 23 percent from the field. I thought that was pretty good.”

CGA trailed 21-20 at the half, but solved Triton’s 1-2-2 zone with a 14-2 stretch over the last 5:48 of the third quarter and into the first minute of the final frame to open up a 39-27 advantage.
“In the second half our zone got a little too extended,” Triton head coach Paul Walker said. “We started giving up easy shots. Our point person and opposite wing person, for the most part, guarded space. Against a quality opponent, you can’t guard space, you have to guard people.”

Eagles freshman Kylee Shipley, coming off back-to-back 19-point eruptions, scored 10 of her game-high 14 points after the intermission. Although Triton minimized Shipley’s touches in the first half, a switch to the point increased the rookie’s offensive involvement in the second half.

Junior guard Katie Barnes chipped in 12 points, including a pair of third-quarter triples from the left wing. The second trifecta broke a 25-25 tie and started the Eagles’ game-changing spurt.

CGA senior Kylie Hermanson, who nailed four fourth-quarter charity tosses, also reached double figures with 11 points and tied with Barnes for team-high rebounding honors with eight. Spot starter Cassie Felton notched the Eagles’ first seven points and yanked down five rebounds.

“We thought at halftime that there were open spots in the middle of (Triton’s) zone,” Christlieb said. “Instead of (Shipley) cutting from the back side where they were shutting her off, we put her at the point where she could pass to the wing and then cut. She got open looks, was able to drive and also kick out to open people. Barnes hit those two 3s. Those were big as well.

“What can you say about Cassie Felton?” Christlieb added. “She really got us rolling in the first quarter.”

Triton junior guard Paige Davis nailed a couple of first-half bombs en route to a team-high 12 points to go along with a game-best three steals. Bethany Shively added all six of her points in a productive Triton first half, Brittany Wallace contributed six points off the bench and Bethany Lemler hauled in eight caroms.

The Trojans turned the ball over a respectable 11 times, but hit just 17.2 percent of their second-half field-goal attempts.

“We played our best first half tonight,” Walker said. “We were much improved taking care of the ball. We got a little bunched up offensively in the second half. Our spacing needed to be better.

“In the first half we did a pretty good job,” he added. “We played against a quality team. Gary’s done a good job and they’re certainly much improved. That’s not the same CGA outfit that won 11 games in the last three seasons combined.”

Although both teams committed relatively few turnovers, CGA and Triton combined for 36 offensive rebounds, six blocked shots and a bundle of loose-ball scrambles.

“It was a gritty, gutty, grind-it-out kind of game,” Christlieb said. “It says a lot for our kids to win this game. The rest of the Academy is on break; we’re the only ones left on campus. It puts a burden on the kids because they’re not starting their break until now. We showed a little moxie. I can’t be more pleased than I am right now.”

Triton hosts Bethany Christian next Monday, while CGA heads to O-D Nov. 30.
