Academy's Varsity B rules again
A pair of Culver Academy teams skated for the Class 5-A hockey state
title Saturday at the Pepsi Coliseum in Indianapolis.
The Varsity B team picked up its eighth state championship since 1990
with a 3-0 victory over the Culver junior varsity.
"It's kind of tough to play your same school," Varsity B coach
Justin Zimmerman said. "All the guys you watch every day and the
guys we're trying to develop as well."
Alex McNeely, Nate Dewhurst and Chris Darnell scored for the Varsity B
team.
"We weren't happy just to be here, we wanted to win," junior
varsity coach Jeremy Church said. "The Varsity B team was clearly
the best team we've played all year. It just speaks to the quality of
the hockey program at Culver and the quality of players we get."
Despite their familiarity, the two teams rarely faced each other this
season, even in practice.
"We've scrimmaged maybe two or three times over the course of the
year," Zimmerman said. "We never play at a full game situation
at all."
The Varsity B team finishes the season with a record of 31-12-2 while
the junior varsity finishes 33-6-4.
Even though it is the second-best team at Culver, the Varsity B team
didn't take the third-best team lightly in preparation for Saturday's
title game.
"It was a bitter rivalry. Our Varsity B guys wanted to win just as
much as if they were playing somebody else," Zimmerman said.
"Our kids all week took practice very seriously."
