Jumping
team at nationals
Every
rider on the Culver jumping
team placed in the top six of their respective classes at the
national finals at
Lake Erie
College
in
Ohio
. Ian Greenberg ’10, Randilyn Fleener ’08, Ali
Davidge ’10, and Emma Ost ’10 finished with ribbon rides
in classes representing scholastic programs from across the
country. The riders drew pooled horses, so their performances
were judged by rides on mounts they had never ridden.
Greenberg (West
Linn
,
Ore.
) finished third individually at JV Beginner Flat. Team
results included: Fleener (
Muncie
,
Ind.
), fourth at JV Novice Over Fences and Davidge (Culver), fifth
at JV Novice Flat; and Ost (

Article
published
Information
literacy instructor Deborah Foley has written an article,
“Young Readers at Risk: Quilt Patterns and the Underground
Railroad” published in the Winter 2007 issue of Indiana
Libraries.
Since 2001, Foley has encountered disturbing trends in
children’s books and craft activities for children that take
an unproven theory of ‘secret codes’ in quilt patterns
being used to facilitate slaves’ escape and treats the
myth as fact instead of fiction.
Foley’s research for this article started during Culver’s
Civil War Living History Week back in October of 2001. Her research found that while the quilt pattern called
“Underground Railroad,” was common, the quilts made in that
design date from the 1890s or later. The quilts were made
to commemorate the courage of those on the road to freedom.
You can find more on this topic at the web page, Analysis:
Dispelling Myths, Foley created specifically for
research on African Americans 1800-1870.
Six
selected
Six
members of the Class of 2007 will be deferring their first
year of college to participate in the English Speaking Union
program next fall. James Garrido (Indianapolis), Josue
Gutierrez (Aguascalientes, Mexico) , Vince Schrader (West
Point, Ind.), Andrew Swanson (Wabash, Ind.), Ben Teaney
(Houston), and Mary Wack (Carmel, Ind.) will spend the next
school year attending a private school in the United Kingdom.
ESU Scholars are chosen on the basis of scholastic
achievement, extracurricular activities, and personal
character. Emotional stability and readiness to adapt to new
situations also are essential character traits. Students
receive full scholarships, including room and board if they
attend a boarding school.
Presidential
Scholar
Andy Parchman ’07 (Baltimore) is one of the 141 high school
seniors from across the country selected as a Presidential Scholar. Parchman, who
will be attending Harvard in the fall, was chosen by an
independent, national committee of educators convened by the
Commission on Presidential Scholars.
Parchman
and Megan Millard
’07
(Greer, S.C.) were two of approximately
500 semifinalists nationwide chosen by the commission's panel
of educators. Earlier this month, the commission made its final selection of 121
students, identifying one boy and one girl from each state,
the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. In addition, up to 15
students are chosen at-large. Approximately 20 boys and 20
girls from each state are initially selected by the U.S.
Department of Education based on their SAT and ACT scores as
Presidential Scholar applicants. Those students are then asked
to complete the necessary paperwork and submit their
information to the Commission on Presidential Scholars.
Parchman is representing Maryland and Millard is representing
South Carolina. Cynthia Shi (Austin, Texas) and Marisa Gilmore
(San Juan, Puerto Rico) also were selected by the U.S.
Department of Education for consideration.
