Given in memory of Cal C. Chamber ’08, the Chambers Award recognizes the first classman who has distinguished himself with a combination of excellence in scholarship and athletics. This year’s recipient was Cesar Gutierrez of Troop, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cesar Gutierrez of Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

A three-year student at The Academies, Gutierrez earned three Gold A’s and one Silver, The Academies’ highest and second-highest academic honors reserved for those students earning a minimum semester grade point average of 3.7 and 3.2, respectively. Other academic honors include induction into the Cum Laude Society, a national academic honor organization for seniors. He also was named a recipient of The President’s Education Award given to seniors with a GPA of at least 3.5 and scores in the 85th percentile or above in either the SAT verbal, SAT math, or ACT composite national tests.

Gutierrez was a member of the varsity swimming and tennis teams all three years at Culver.

He advanced to the position of Squadron Commander in the Cavalry and was a member of the Culver Black Horse Troop that participated in the January 2001 Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C.

Gutierrez will attend Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., this fall.
