Culver Annual Review

highlighted by Troop A victory

Seven months of leadership and military training culminated Saturday, March 1, with Culver’s Annual Review (CAR). Presided over and judged by four ROTC members from Purdue University, CAR is a competition between all nine male units (Company A, B,C; Battery A,B,C; Troop A, B; Band) within the school. Participants are judged on: In-ranks inspection (40%), four days of room inspections (10% per inspection for a total of 40%), common area (bathrooms, lounges, etc.) inspection (15%) and parade (5%).

When the dust settled and the points were totaled, Troop A took home first place, ahead of runner-up Battery B and Troop B. Both Troop A counselor Ed Quella and Battery B counselor John Gavlick said they couldn’t have been more proud of the effort their respective units gave.  “I would have to say the cadets demonstrated great teamwork, work ethic and pride,” Quella said of his 38-man organization. “It’s a credit to all of them. It was terrific.”

“It’s just a great opportunity to bring everyone together, because everyone’s out for a common goal,” added Gavlick. “It’s a great way to demonstrate teamwork. They  really find out what each other is made of in this situation, but they still have fun with it. There was great senior leadership on our part.”

CAR’s Honored Guest was U.S. Air Force Colonel Dartanian “Doc” Warr ’76. The Cleveland, Ohio, native and graduate of the United States Air Force  Academy has served in the Air Force since 1981. He holds a master’s degree in psychology from Wright State University and a master’s degree in national security strategy from Golden Gate University. Warr is the founder of several mentoring organizations for children, teens and adults focused on making them more successful in life.

While at Culver, he was Infantry Battalion Commander and a member of Company B. Warr, 44, served on the Culver Legion Board from 1997 to 2000, before being named to the Board of Trustees later that year.  He was awarded Cum Laude status from Culver in 2000, an honor presented to two alumni each year. The son of Thomas and Barbara Warr, he is married to Denise Ann Doersy and is the father of Alexandra, 12, and Ariana, 13.

“The weekend just brings a culmination to everything we try to do here with the military,” Deputy Commandant Tim Montgomery said. “It’s the one event that shows the teamwork required to be part of a unit here.”
