SECTIONALS ROCHESTER -- It wasn't so much a competition as a coronation. Culver Academy's victory at the Rochester Sectional girls track meet Tuesday was about as complete as it can get. The Eagles won eight out of 16 events, finishing 1-2 in four of them, and scored 162 points to dominate the 11-team field at Rochester High School's track. Freshman Alex Banfich broke a 17-year old record in the 3200-meter run, clocking 11:12.22 to erase the old standard of 11:14.3 held by Kankakee Valley's Celeste Susnis. Temi Adeniji, Kelly Norton, Kelly Livingston and Banfich each took home a pair of blue ribbons, and the Eagles advanced at least one athlete to next week's regional at Bremen in every event except the high jump, shot put, discus and 100-meter hurdles. Not bad for a team that used to be happy just finishing in the middle of the pack. "We have more talented girls than we ever have before, including an influx of good freshmen who have helped us in a lot of events," said Culver Academy coach Mike Chastain. "The older girls on the team have done a good job of getting younger girls to come out. "Unfortunately, next week it's a whole different world," said Chastain, looking ahead to the regional. "Let's just say the level of competition will be elevated." Plymouth was a distant second with 118 points, but coach Ben Waymouth felt it was one of the Pilgrims' best efforts of the season, showing just how far ahead of the field the Eagles flew. "Our team is really, really close, and when we come to a meet like this, we're not just performing for ourselves, we're running for our teammates, too," said Norton, the Culver Academy sophomore who took the long jump by sailing 16-2 3/4 and ran a leg on the winning 400 relay. "Yeah, after last year, we got a taste of glory, and that's all it took," added Olabisi Ibrahim, who finished second in the 300-meter hurdles and also ran on the 400 relay. Culver Academy took control of the meet from the start, winning the 3200 relay and getting a 1-2 finish in the pole vault from Livingston and Logan Ashcraft. "I'm a track athlete who does whatever my team needs me to do," said Livingston, who later won the 300 hurdles in 49.44 seconds. "I think that's what we're all about," she added. "We do what we need to do." Plymouth sophomore Elaine Hessel did what she had to do in the shot put, reaching 37 feet, 4 inches to win by almost two feet. "I'm looking forward to the regional, because I like being pushed by all the other good throwers," said Hessel. "Actually, I feel more pressure when I know I'm supposed to win. I'd rather be in a position where I have to fight for it, like next week." Rochester discus thrower Cassie Greives finished first with a toss of 112-3 and then placed third in the shot. "I don't know why, the discus is just my better event," Greives said. "With a good week of practice, I think I can put it all together." Culver Community freshman Alicia Allen is going to the regional in four events after winning the 200, finishing second in the long jump and 100, and anchoring the third-place 400 relay. "I'm nervous, but once I get running, I just forget all that," said Allen, who competed despite an injury suffered at last week's Northern State Conference meet. "Really, a lot of good things happened here tonight," said Waymouth, whose Pilgrims celebrated an exciting come-from-behind victory in the 1600 relay to close the sectional. "It's not a bad way to go into the regional." Team scores: Culver Academy 162, Plymouth 118, Manchester 83, Northfield 59, Rochester 49, Culver Community 46, Tippecanoe Valley 30, Caston 25, Triton 18, Whitko 18, Oregon-Davis 14.
