H. O’Neal Turner II dies
O'Neal Turner, 50, the Academies’ director of College Advising, died at his Culver home on June 20, 2005, following an extended illness.
Dr. Turner joined the Academies staff in 1994 as director of College Advising, assisting hundreds of students in gaining admission to the colleges of their choice. For a time he also served the dual role as the director of admissions. He was an assistant boys’ lacrosse coach for the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
Previously, Dr. Turner was the dean of admissions at Butler and Ohio Wesleyan universities. He also served as senior associate director of admissions at Georgetown University.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1977 and a master’s from Loyola Marymount University in 1980 before completing his doctorate work at American University. In 1993, he earned a second master’s degree in administration from the University of Notre Dame.
Dr. Turner authored several books on the college advising process, including The Complete Idiot’s Guide to College Planning (1999), 50 Things You Can Do to Get Into the College of Your Choice (1997), The 10-Minute Guide to Getting into College (1996), and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Getting Into College (1994).
Raised in the Catholic faith, he was blessed into the Order of Christian Workers, a Texas organization that aids the homeless. Dr. Turner’s love of learning and teaching others was never-ending. He enjoyed politics, baseball, and was an avid Notre Dame fan.
He is survived by his wife, Debra, a CGA counselor; a son, H. O'Neal III ’00, a Culver admissions counselor; a daughter, Ashley ’03, a student at Georgetown University; a sister, Patti Robbins-Vignal, and a brother, Tracy Campbell, both of California.
Services were held June 24 in Culver Memorial Chapel with interment at the Cedar Grove Cemetery of Notre Dame University. The Bonine-Odom Funeral Home in Culver was in charge of arrangements. Letters of condolence may be sent to the family via the website obituary page:

Gloria
Hinton An
avid supporter of Academies athletes and a former Uniform Department
employee, Gloria D. Hinton, 50, died June 5, 2005. Mrs. Hinton is the
wife of Academies’ baseball coach Gary Hinton. Mrs.
Hinton also volunteered much of her time and talent teaching music for
the Culver Community Youth Center and taught piano to many Culver area
children. She was a member of the Pretty Lake Trinity United Methodist
Church choir. She was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and enjoyed
collecting anything to do with cows. In
addition to her husband, Mrs. Hinton is survived a daughter, Andrea
Manzuk of Harrisburg, Pa.; a son, Peter Manzuk of Lafayette, Ind., her
parents, John and Joyce Plante of Culver; a brother, Wayne Plante of
Deland, Fla.; and a grandson. Her father, John Plante, is retired from
the Academies’ Facilities Department. Funeral
services were held June 10 in Memorial Chapel. Memorial contributions
may be made to the Pretty Lake Trinity UMC choir.
