Studying the arts cultivates that vital connection between the development of an artist's aesthetic literacy and achieving personal mastery in artistic practice. As four diverse yet related areas: visual art, music, dance and drama, the Fine Arts support intellectual and personal development in an integrated manner, both within the department and within the larger curriculum.
We comprehend the world in many ways. Being able to describe or comprehend something scientifically, mathematically, descriptively or historically cannot wholly construct a person's total understanding; but combined with awareness offered through the study of the arts, a person achieves a much deeper understanding and comprehension. There can be no more authentic instruction than that which is found in the arts.
Student groups perform for each other and show their work to the school community at large. Our Concert Series brings professional touring artists to campus not only to entertain, but also to serve as examples of superior artistic practice. Through our Visiting Artist Series, outstanding artists are brought to the campus for short residencies throughout the year, where seminars and master classes offer students a more intense level of interaction.
Culver students may meet the one credit graduation requirement by taking a full array of credit courses in every discipline, such as visual art, including photography and ceramics, instrumental and vocal music, drama, and dance. We offer studio courses in every discipline, like painting, acting, dance and music ensembles, and history and theory courses in most areas.
