Information on Concussions

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that can affect your schoolwork, performance on the athletic field, and day-to-day tasks. In order to ensure the safety and success of student-athletes, the Culver Athletic Trainers have created procedures for recognizing, preventing, and treating a concussion.

All students receive a comprehensive approach to managing head injuries:

  • All new students are baseline tested using the ImPACT neurocognitive test.
  • When displaying signs or symptoms consistent with that of a head injury, students undergo a sideline evaluation by a Certified Athletic Trainer. Students are then referred to the Health Center for assessment and management by a Physician.
  • Students are re-tested via ImPACT after head injury, and testing scores are compared to baseline scores
  • Academic and athletic accommodations are made based on injury, including classroom accommodations such as half-classes, note-takers, quiz/testing ability, and learning support plans.
  • Before being released, students receive Concussion Rehab, or "brain rehab"
  • When ImPact scores return to normal and the athlete is symptom free they are released to return to play protocol.
