Before he came to Notre Dame, Stefanic coached the Croatian Junior Foil Team and served as Head Coach of the "Mladost" Fencing Club in Zagreb, Croatia. Between 1992-1998, he led his team to win six team and five individual Croatian National Championships.

As a fencer, Stefanic was a member of the Yugoslav Foil National team from 1985-1991, and a member of the Croatian National Team from 1991-1997. He was a two-time Yugoslav, and three-time Croatian National Champion in foil, and fenced in 5 World, 4 European, and 2 Junior World Championships.
