CGA Crew Overview
Overview
Culver Military Academy, Culver, Indiana, began it's rowing team in 1921. The campus is located on Lake Maxinkuckee in north central Indiana. Culver Military Academy opened in 1894, and first opened a summer naval school in 1902. The summer program began with two fixed seat, ten-oared "man-o-war" cutters, and thus began Culver's relation with rowing. Since then Culver has built a long tradition of rowing within the Midwest and some trips to the east coast. Culver Girls Academy opened as a coordinate college preparatory school in 1971, and in 1978 joined the cadets of Culver Military Academy in rowing. The team represents Culver Academies, and was the site of the first Midwest Scholastic Regatta, in 1984.
The 2008 team concluded with 21 cadets and 20 girls and 6 coxswains. The team qualified five of their sixteen entries in fourteen events in the finals at the Midwest Scholastic Championship, only to have the wind and weather cause cancellation of three of the finals involving Culver (Boys Varsity 1x, Boys Varsity 2x, Girls Varsity 2-). Culver medaled second in the Boys Junior 4x (the first year of the event) and third in the Girls Varsity 4x. In team placings CMA moved up to tenth and CGA finished in 20th, the same place as last year. The wind was relentless during the spring. Out of thirty-three potential days of practice, we were able to get the team on the water only 15 days, with 3 more where a part of the team rowed. Two regattas were cancelled, the race in Crystal Lake and the Parents Regatta hosted by Culver, along with several finals at the Midwest Scholastic Championship. Competing in just two regattas the CMA Varsity 8+ was 1-1 and the CGA Varsity 8+ was undefeated (5-0). CMA's strength was in their Varsity 4+ and sculling boats. They qualified in the Junior 4x (placing second), the Varsity 1x and Varsity 2x at the Midwest Championship. The CMA Varsity 2x was undefeated (9-0). CGA's Varsity 4+ was 8-8. CGA's Varsity 4x placed third at the Midwest Championship. The CMA and CGA novices demonstrated improvement over the course of the season, but were greatly effected by the lack of time on the water. The CMA Novice 8+ was 10-5 with first place finishes in Indianapolis and Culver, and a third place finish at the Grand Rapids regatta. The CMA Novice 4+ was 4-8 and the team often raced a second Culver novice boat. With just eight novice girls the CGA's Novice 8+ was 8-8 and the CGA Novice 4+ was 7-8.
The 2009 team concluded with 17 cadets and 22 girls and 7 coxswains, after losing several members a of the team to injuries. The team qualified seven of their thirteen entries in twelve events in the finals at the Midwest Scholastic Championship. Culver medaled second in the Boys Junior 4x (for the second year in a row), the Boys Varsity 2x, and third in the Girls Varsity 4x and Boys Novice 4+. In team placings CMA was again 10th and CGA moved up to 17th, after finishing 20th last year. Prospects are good for next season, since CMA graduates no seniors and CGA graduates two rowers and two varsity coxswains. The wind was much more cooperative this spring than last, however we still did not race the Parent's Regatta for the second year in a row due to wind. Competing in four regattas this year the CMA Varsity 8+ was 11-3 and the CGA Varsity 8+ 15-2. CMA's strength was in their Varsity 4+ (4-0, undefeated in two regattas) and sculling boats. They placed second in the Junior 4x and Varsity 2x (12-2, only defeated twice by eventual SRAA champion Cincinnati Country Day) at the Midwest Scholastic Championship. The CMA Junior 4x went on to the American Scholastic Championship. They raced well but failed to advance to the finals. CGA's Varsity 4+ was undefeated (7-0). CGA's Varsity 4x placed third, the Varsity 2x placed fifth and the Varsity 2- placed sixth at the Midwest Scholastic Championship. The CMA and CGA novices demonstrated improvement over the course of the season. The CMA Novice 8+ raced in only the first regatta before one of the members experienced a season ending shoulder dislocation. The CMA Novice 4+ placed third at Midwest and was 17-5. The CGA first Novice 4+ was 8-2 and the CGA Novice 8+ was 18-6 and placed fourth at Midwest.
The 2010 team concluded with 22 cadets and 21 girls and 9 coxswains, after losing several members a of the team to illness. Prospects are good for next season because of the number of novices. CMA graduates five seniors and CGA graduates two rowers and one varsity coxswain. The team qualified seven of their fourteen entries in the finals at the Midwest Scholastic Championship. Culver won the Boys Varsity 4x (after placing second in the Junior 4x for two years in a row). In team placings CMA was 16th after a 10th place finish last year, and CGA moved down to 24th, after finishing 17th last year. At the Midwest Junior Championship Culver qualified eight of its nine entries for the finals and placed third in the Girls Varsity 4x and Girls 2nd Novice 4+ along with placing first in the Boys Varsity 1x petite final. Because Grand Rapids moved their regatta date to conflict with the date of the Parents Regatta, Culver was unable to attract other teams and had to cancel. This was the third year with out the Parents Regatta, the previous two years' were cancelled due to wind. Because Alumni weekend was scheduled for the fourth weekend in May Culver took advantage of the opportunity to attend the Midwest Junior Championship for the first time, on the third weekend with a group of eighteen selected athletes. This year the CMA Varsity 8+ was 5-4 (competing in 3 regattas) and the CGA Varsity 8+ 8-6 (competing in 4 regattas). CMA's strength was in their Varsity 4+ (27-12 in 6 regattas) and sculling boats. CMA placed first in the Varsity 4x at the Midwest Scholastic Championship. CGA's Varsity 4+ was 9-6 during four regattas. CGA's Varsity 4x (7-4) placed third in the Midwest Junior Championship. The CMA Varsity 4x went on to the American Scholastic Championship. They raced well but failed to advance to the finals, but demonstrated they were among the fastest 4x in the country. CMA qualified the Varsity 2x for USRowing Youth National, and CGA qualified the varsity 4x but decided not to attend. The CMA and CGA novices demonstrated strength and consistency over the course of the season. The CMA Novice 8+ was 25-16 and placed first at three regattas.CGA's Novice 8+ was 37-19 and placed first at four regattas and also raced a Freshman 8+ at the Midwest Scholastic. The CGA Novice (A) 4+ placed first at three regattas, was fourth at the Midwest Scholastic, and finished with a record of 33-9. The CGA Novice (B) 4+ finished in third place at the Midwest Junior Championship and was 11-7. The CMA Novice 4+ (A) was 22-19 with three regatta first place finishes, and the (B) 4+ was 15-8.
The 2011 spring season was one of incredible results. At our regatta in Grand Rapids we won all of our races; at the Indiana/Kentucky championship we won twelve of thirteen races; and at our Culver regatta won nine of fourteen races. The high point of the season was the Midwest Scholastic Championship that included school teams from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, and western Pennsylvania. Of Culver's eleven entries, we won five events and medaled in five others, leading to second place among all the girls teams {our highest placing since 1994, and first championship victory by CGA since 1997} and second place among combined boys and girls points. The team was larger than in the recent past. It concluded with 28 cadets and 27 girls and 7 coxswains. Larger numbers along with redefining our technique, increased training load, and having two girls varsity eights helped the team to success. Prospects are good for next season because of the number of novices. CMA graduates four seniors and CGA graduates five rowers and two varsity coxswains. Thirteen Culver athletes attended the National Scholastic Rowing Championship in Camden, NJ. It was a challenging competitive opportunity. It was the first time that Culver had been represented by more than a single boat and the first time that CGA has competed at this regatta. We were a team. The whole opportunity came on the heels of our success at the relocated and rescheduled Midwest Scholastic Championship. That regatta was shifted a week later and moved from Cincinnati to Oak Ridge, TN. We scrambled to adjust our regatta schedule and revise travel plans to a more distant and expensive venue. Due to the relocation we were pushed over our annual budget allocation, and were fortunate to have donors that financed the trip. This year the CMA Varsity 8+ was 8-1 (its only loss at the first regatta). CMA was also strong in the Varsity 4+ (30-7, including a 3/10 of a second loss in the finals of the Midwest Scholastic and a sixth place finish in the Scholastic National) and the Varsity 4x (10-1, second place at the Midwest Scholastic). The CGA Varsity 8+ 20-6 (undefeated until the Midwest Scholastic, where they placed third). CGA's Varsity 4+ was 8-1, and the other half of the varsity 8+ raced as a 2nd Varsity 4+ and was a strong 7-2. CGA's Varsity 4x (7-4) placed first in the Midwest Scholastic Championship and went on to the Scholastic Nationals. The CGA Junior 4x was close with the Varsity 4x (defeating them with a shifted line-up at the Culver Regatta) was the Midwest Scholastic Champion and also went on to the Scholastic Nationals. Their final record was 7-5. The CGA 2nd Varsity 8+ was 10-1 and finished as silver medalists at the Midwest Scholastic Championship.
