Overview

The 2011-2012 Culver Academies Wrestling Team had an outstanding year. The team went 25-10 on the season and won the sectional championship for the first time since 1998.It was also the first sectional title at Culver for Coach Matt Behling. The Eagles were also ranked in Class 2A by the state coaches association for the first time, finishing the year No. 7.

Not only did the team rewrite history, but there were outstanding individual performances as well. Two wrestlers, Kayla Miracle and Anthony McHugh, qualified for the state finals. But Miracle, a 106-pound sophomore, made history by becoming the first female wrestler to qualify for the Indiana High School State Finals, which drew national attention. McHugh '13, wrestling at 132 pounds, made his third appearance as a state qualifier.

Miracle, McHugh and Edmond Hogan '14 (152 pounds) were all sectional champions. David Zajac '14, Carlos Salinas '12, and Pascal Brun '12 were sectional runners-up. By winning the sectional team championship, Culver qualified to wrestle as a team at the regionals.

Those six sectional qualifiers, plus Danny Williams '13 and Collin Parker'13 advanced to the regional level. McHugh was crowned a regional champion and advanced to the semistate along with Miracle, Hogan, and Williams.

In addition, during the season the Eagles won the Early Bird Duals, Winamac Super 6 Duals, and were runner-up in the 10- team Culver Invitational.

Culver's performance in 2011-12 in the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Tournament also qualified the team for one of four early bids to compete in next year's Team State Championship. This will mark the first time in school history that the Academies will wrestle for a Team State Championship at the Team State Finals.
