Overview
Tennis at Culver became a varsity sport in 1922. Our 87th year was another great one at the Gable Tennis Complex. In addition to an outstanding CMA team, the facility garnered the attention of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, which named Culver (for the first time since joining the IHSAA for tennis) as one of 16 state regional tournament sites and one of only four semi-state tournament sites. This honor comes on the heels of being one of seven USTA outstanding new facility honorees in 2010.
The Eagle netters returned five starters from its 2010 squad, which was a Semistate finalist. We debuted at #27 in the state coaches' poll, rose to #15 on September 7, fell out of the rankings after September 16, then won seven of our last eight matches to finish #25 at the end of the season.
Our varsity record was 14-6 and we gained a spot in the IHSAA Semistate Finals (the mythical Sweet 16). Tennis is a single class sport in Indiana. All six of our losses came at the hands of teams ranked in the Top 30, including three ranked #8 or higher in the state. We captured our eighth straight sectional title and second straight regional title. We have made it to the Semistate level four of the last five years. The four-year players have helped compile a 52-28 record over the last four seasons. 30 boys earned varsity or junior varsity letters this year, up from 22 letter winners in 2010.
Looking ahead to the 2012 fall season, six varsity monogram winners will return from this year's squad.
The coaching staff extends best wishes to graduating senior lettermen, Carlos Garcia (1-year letter winner), Channing Mitzell (Co-Captain, four-year letter winner), Will Stackhouse (Captain, four-year letter winner), and Wilson Wu (Captain, three-year letter winner).
