Florence Troeger Invitational (5/19/12)

The team traveled to Granger to defend its title in the Florence Troeger Memorial Invitational. The tournamnt is named after a teaching professional who spent years at a littl nine hole course (par 29) located in the center of South Bend, and who developed a number of prominent high school players in the 1950s and 60's. The field consist of nine schools, mostly South Bend area schools, and we were proud to be included. The event was played at the Knollwood C.C., an extremely tight and demanding layout. Only one of our boys played there last year, so it was a new experience for most of them. The one nine, actually the front nine of the west course, is extremely tight, and we struggled there. We played better on the more open nine (the back nine of the east course), but not well enough to catch Penn whidh won the event with a total of 323. Considering that this is Penn's home course, I wasn't terribly displeased with our second place finish at 329, althoiugh I felt that a win was within our reach. John Connelly again led the way with a 79  (39-40) to finish 4th overall (only four of the forty-five players broke 80). John continued to play very steady golf and, while he missed a few makeable putts, I was pleased with his consistency and ablity to stay away from disatrous holes. Logan Joseph was next at 82 (42-40). It was his lowest 18-hole score of the season and indicative of his improved ball striking; if he can bring his number of putts down (he had 37 on Saturday), he certainly has the potential to get into the 70's. Davis Payne, our stroke average leader at 79. 8, was next with an 84 (43-41); he had a double and triple bogey on the west nine, and it was a day when he just couldn't get anything going. Bailey Roubos had 84, bouncing back from a double-triple bogey finish on the west nine, to shoot a fine 39 on the east course. Ben Sharff completed the scoring with a 94 (49-45); he had trouble finding the fairways, and incurred a number of penalty strokes during the round. The team heads into the final week of the season with matches on Tuesday and Thursday at Mystic Hills, and then concludes the season at the Northwestern Inv. in Kokomo on Saturday.

CMA vs. Caston, St. Joe, Winamac

On another perfect spring afternoon the team returned to Mystic Hills for a 4-way match. Playing the par 35 front nine, the boys shot their best round of the season with a 149, easily defeating Winamac (162), St. Joe (182), and Caston (208). With the 3 wins, the season record improved to 13-1. Ben Sharff and Bailey Roubos led the way with 1-over par 36's, the best round of the season for each. Both have worked hard in practice, and it was nice to see some tangible results. Bailey's round consisted of one bogey and the rest pars; Ben had two bogeys, one birdie, and six pars.   Davis Payne was close behind at 37. John Connelly and Logan Joseph closed out the scoring with 40's. As a team we had only one double bogey, by far our most consistent performance of the season. The varsity returns to action on Saturday, defending its title in the Flo Troeger Invitational at the Knollwood C.C. in Granger.
The JV team also played well, shooting 172 to 199 for St. Joe. Tim Thompson had the low score with 42. Matt Moody had 43, Michael Heodkamp 45, Zach Allyn 46, and Carter Radovan 47. With the victory, the JV record now stands at 8-1.
