COLLEGE ADVISING

Mission

The College Advising Office seeks to provide personalized college advising for all Culver students and their parents in the various phases of the application and admissions process, i.e., college exploration, applications, and representation. The ultimate goal is to assist each student with a variety of collegiate options about which they are satisfied.

Principle

Foster and maintain close relations with widely respected post-secondary institutions, actively supporting its students as they seek admission to the colleges and universities of their choice.

College Advising will:

1. Obtain current information from both students and parents regarding their personal and academic criteria and preferences.

2. Create and modify, with student and parent input, a college list that accurately estimates the student's chance of admission, thereby guiding each student through the exploration and application process.

3 Educate the students through the College Advising Guidance Class, with the assistance of a text and lectures, to the process of visitation and representation on college campuses, and the creation of application material to the colleges.

4. Meet and work with individual students struggling to earn the grades necessary for them to be competitive to the colleges they seek to attend.

5. Assimilate the information obtained from faculty and counselors to better represent our student through school recommendation.

6. Meet the emotional needs of both the parents and students. The College Advising office will meet regularly with the students and communicate with the parents to keep them well informed about the exploration and application process.

7. Represent each student through written and oral recommendations to the colleges they seek most to attend.

                          8. Provide resource information to parents and students regarding financial aid.

9. Invite college representatives from a broad cross-section of institutions to visit Culver and share knowledge of their institutions with our students, and to increase the College Representatives' understanding of all the advantages Culver students experience academically, extracurricular programs, etc.

10. To educate college admissions staffs on the advantages of considering Culver students. i.e.:Culver lays a foundation in Leadership, Time Management Skills and Goal Setting Techniques.

11. Visit a wide variety of colleges on an annual basis, in an effort to experience and learn "first hand" about these institutions, while educating their admission representatives about the uniqueness of Culver.

                          12. Provide volunteer college advising assistance to the less advantaged outside of the Culver community.

                          13. Promote and fund professional growth experiences for member of the Staff.

14. Seek to provide an appreciation for faculty dedication and effort in producing student recommendations.
