A Distinguished Merit Scholarship Program
The Culver Naval Band claims a long and proud history, dating back to 1904 when it was formed at the direction of Col. Leigh Gignilliat. Over the years, it has played a major role on campus, becoming one of the institution's most beloved organizations. Today the Naval Band provides the musical backdrop to a Culver summer in which 1,300 campers from around the world experience six weeks of fun, learning, and achievement. A strong Naval Band helps to maintain cherished traditions such as the weekly Garrison Parade, Upper School Retreat, and Moonlight Serenade without a band of quality, these traditions would be lost or become a dim shadow of their former glory.
Each May, ten extraordinary young men learn they have been selected for a musical summer experience second to none. The Naval Band Scholarship Program at Culver Summer Schools & Camps will uplift them in mind, body, and spirit as it prepares them for the future and a lifetime of principled leadership.
Endowed by alumni/ae and friends of the Culver Summer Naval School Band, the program will eventually support 20 outstanding students at Culver. The first Naval Band Scholars began their Culver careers in the summer of 2007, with the entire group to be enrolled by the fall of 2010.
Potential recipients of the award will be incoming Upper Campers between the ages of 13-17. These scholarships are selected on the basis of merit only, with the scholarship covering full tuition, room and board, and uniforms.
