The Culver Academies' Batten Scholars

Class Entering for the 2004 - 2005 School Year

 

The following students are the sixth class of Batten Scholars.

Seventeen finalists were selected from among 170 applicants 

and invited to visit the campus 

for a weekend of school activities, interviews and Batten Scholars dinner.  

The following six scholars were selected from among those 17.  


 

     

 

Romina Clemente

Romina Clemente is the daughter of Romy and Annie Clemente of Pembroke Pines, Florida. A straight-A student from first through eighth grades, Clemente was an honors student at Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School last year, as well as president of the National Junior Honor Society.  She received the Presidential Award at Pembroke Pines for her academic achievements and was voted MVP of the eighth grade volleyball team.  Clemente is a nationally-ranked tennis player by the USTA.  She was a member of the Florida USTA 12 & under team that won the National USTA Championships in Tennessee in 2002.  She represented Florida in the Nike National 14 & under Junior USTA Tournament in California in 2003, and she was a member of the Florida USTA 14 & under team that won the USTA National Junior Championships in July, 2004.

 

                                                                                                     Matthew Edwards

Matthew Edwards is the son of Thomas and Sheryl Edwards of La Porte, Indiana.

Edwards attended Boston Middle School in La Porte. An actor in the La Porte Little Theatre since 1992, he is a standout golfer, as well as a travel soccer player. Edwards is highly active in community service and with his church and was in 2003 selected to attend the “People to People” world leadership forum in Washington, D.C. In 2002, Edwards was nominated for People to People's prestigious “National Ambassador of the Year” award. The straight-A student also was active in student council and choir in middle school.

 

Trevor Grywatch

Trevor Grywatch is the son of Thomas and Patricia Grywatch of Ashburn, Virginia. Grywatch previously attended Belmont Ridge Middle School in Leesburg, Virginia. A straight-A student since the fourth grade, Grywatch is a standout hockey player, evidenced by his selection to the USA Hockey Select-13 Festival in 2003 at Kent State and the National Select-14 Festival in 2004 at Rochester as part of the team representing the Southeast District. He also is a baseball player and holds a black belt in Korean karate.

 

                                                                                                      Evan Hoese

Evan Hoese is the daughter of William and Sharon Hoese of Columbia, South Carolina. Hoese comes to Culver after spending her freshman year at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, where she also was on full academic scholarship. Identified as part of Duke University’s Talent Identification Program, she was on Heathwood’s honor council and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. A standout athlete, Hoese won a SCISA state championship in the 3,200 meters in 2004 and also was the SCISA Female Athlete of the Year in 2003, the same year in which she earned Heathwood’s Most Outstanding Athlete in both track and field and cross country.

 

Ana Pedrajo

Ana Pedrajo is the daughter of Dario Pedrajo and Erica Pedrajo of Miami, Florida.Pedrajo attended G.W. Carver Middle School in Miami. She received awards in both her school and county science fairs, allowing her to compete in the Florida state science and engineering fair in April. She has been recognized as part of the Duke University Talent Identification Program and earned academic awards in math, Spanish and language arts. Her extracurricular activities include sailing, tutoring, crew, drama, filmmaking, dance, piano and horsemanship.

 

                                                            Angela Solis

Angela Solis is the daughter of Salvador and Elvia Solis of Hinsdale, Illinois. Solis attended Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove, Illinois. She finished in the top five in the National French Contest as a sixth-grader and seventh-grader, has served as student council president and won an “Outstanding” award in the state science fair. Active in community service, she plays piano and basketball and has competed on a travel soccer team for the past five years.
