Culver Academies' Batten Scholars
Class
Entering for the 2003 - 2004 School Year

The
following students are the fifth class of Batten Scholars.
Sixteen
semi-finalists were selected from among 200 applicants
and
invited to visit the campus
for
a weekend of school activities, interviews and Batten Scholars
dinner.
The
following six scholars were selected from among those
sixteen.

Logan Glickfield
Logan S. Glickfield is the son of Dr. W. Scott '71 and Mrs. Cecilia B.
Glickfield of Middletown, Ohio. He completed his
freshman year at Middletown High School, where he competed in
soccer and tennis, in addition to his roles in the Boy
Scouts, student government and three church youth groups.
He has earned straight A’s since the third grade and
scored 790 on the math portion of the SAT exam as an
eighth-grader. Glickfield was first in his class of 535
students during the first semester.
At
Culver, he earned two Gold A awards as a sophomore and
lettered in varsity crew. A Gold A Award is attained with
a grade-point average of 3.7 or better during a given
semester.
Khyrstyn McGarry

Khyrstyn R. “Nan” McGarry is the daughter of Kymberley L.
McGarry of Ash Grove, Missouri. As an eighth-grader at Mount Vernon
Middle School, McGarry was a straight-A student who performed in the
jazz band and band, played golf, worked for the school newspaper and
yearbook and was a member of the National Junior Honor Society. At
Culver, she earned two Gold A awards as a freshman.
Andrew Parchman

Andrew
A. "Andy" Parchman is the son of Mr. Todd L. ’72 and
Mrs. Bryn B. Parchman of Baltimore, Maryland. As an eighth-grader at
Gilman School, Andy earned straight A’s, played football, lacrosse
and wrestled, in addition to being involved with piano, theater,
church and community service groups and competing for a local
sailing team. He earned the Daniel C. Amidon Citizenship Award three
years in a row at Gilman, where he also earned the William S. Thomas
Prize for outstanding academic achievement.
A bagpipe player, Andy authored a play last spring.
He also recently learned that he earned a Gold Medal/Summa
Cum Laude on the National Latin Exam.
Andy’s older brother, Jack, graduated from Culver in 2004.
As a
freshman at Culver, Andy lettered in varsity football last
fall and Varsity A lacrosse, in addition to being class
treasurer and a piper in the school’s Pipe and Drum
Team. He earned two Gold A awards in the classroom.
Cynthia
Shi

Cynthia X. Shi is the daughter of Mr. Nanmin Shi and Mrs. Sherry
Chen of Austin, Texas. As an eighth-grader at Deer Park
Middle School, Shi made straight A’s, competed in
volleyball and cross country, performed in the orchestra
and on the cheerleading team, in addition to being in the
National Junior Honor Society and a member of her church
youth group, student council and several math and science
organizations. She earned two Gold A awards her freshman
year at Culver.
Kristen Taglione

Kristen Nichole Taglione is the daughter of Elizabeth Hughes of
Powell, Ohio, and Thomas Taglione of Dublin, Ohio. As an
eighth-grader at Liberty Middle School, Taglione was a
straight-A student, president of the theater club, a
member of the National Social Studies Olympiad, the
National Math Olympiad, the Girl Scouts, and a softball
player. She earned two Gold A awards at Culver her
freshman year.
Lujie Zhang

Lujie Zhang is the daughter of Dr. Xiangtong Zhang and
Mrs. Bei Bei
Xu of Canton, Michigan. As
an eighth-grader at
East Middle School, she was a straight-A student
who enjoyed dance, piano and tutoring math and who also was a member
of Plymouth-Canton school district Talented and Gifted Program. She
previously worked as a teacher’s assistant at her Chinese school,
where she now teaches dance to younger students during the summers. Zhang was
president of the school student council, was a member of the math
club, held the position of editor-in-chief of the school paper and
competed this spring in both the Michigan social
studies and science Olympiads. She earned two Gold A Awards as a
freshman at Culver.
