Q: What is the Batten
Scholars Program?
A: It is a full-tuition merit
scholarship offered by The Culver
Academies and endowed by Frank
Batten '45.
Q: What exactly does the scholarship provide
for?
A: The scholarship includes tuition, room and
board, uniforms, and books. In addition,
the scholarship covers the cost of participation in one of
Culver's spring break work projects during the sophomore
year, and an off-site summer study program at a college or
university in the United States or overseas after the
junior year.
Q: Who is eligible?
A: Incoming freshmen and sophomores who have been
accepted for admission are eligible to apply for the
Batten Scholarship.
Q: What criteria are used for selection?
A: Batten Scholarships are based on outstanding
merit; financial need is not considered. Applicants must
first be accepted for admittance to The Academies.
Scholarship recipients will have demonstrated academic,
citizenship and character excellence prior to admission
and will continue to excel academically, as a student
leader, and in extracurricular activities throughout their
Culver careers.
Q: Who will make the selection?
A: The selections will be made by the Batten
Scholars Committee, which is comprised of eight faculty/staff members.
Q: How many scholarships will be awarded?
A: Six to eight Batten Scholars will be named each academic
year.
Q: Is the scholarship for one year or multiple
years?
A: While receipt of an award for one year is not a
guarantee that the scholarship will be renewed, our
expectation is that the scholarship will follow the
recipient through all three or four years, as long as the
student's performance remains strong.
Q: Can I lose my Batten Scholarship?
A: Yes, a scholarship may be canceled at any time
because of conduct the committee deems contrary to the
acceptable academic and citizenship standards.
Q: What are the "educational enrichment
opportunities"?
A: These funded opportunities include, but
are not limited to:
~ A Culver work project or volunteer service program
during spring break of the sophomore year. Past Culver
work projects have provided students the opportunities to
assist residents of New York City, South Carolina, Mexico,
Guatemala and China. The Batten Scholars Committee must
approve volunteer programs. All supplies and travel
expenses are provided up to $2,500. (Note: The IRS considers such
funding as taxable income.)
~ An off-site summer study program between the junior
and senior years. Working through the Batten Scholars
Committee, students select from a variety of summer study
programs offered at colleges and universities in the U.S.
and abroad. This is an opportunity to explore individual
academic and cultural interests. All supplies and travel
expenses are provided up to $6,000. (Note: The IRS considers
such funding as taxable income.)
Q: What's the deadline for applying?
A: Batten Scholarship applications must be received
by the Admissions Office by January 15, 2008. Remember that an
individual must be accepted for admittance to be eligible
for the Batten Scholarship. You do not need to wait
for admission before submitting the additional Batten
Scholarship application. You are encouraged to
complete your application for admission and your Batten
application in a timely manner, as the Batten Committee
will begin reviewing completed files as early as January
1, 2008.
Q:
When will I know if I've received the Scholarship?
A:
Applicants will be notified no later than
March 31, 2008 regarding their selection as a
Batten Scholar for the 2008 - 2009 school year.
