Established
in 1999, the Batten Scholars Program is a
merit-based scholarship
offered
to selected students who are admitted to The
Academies.
A
Batten Scholarship
covers full tuition, room and board, books, uniform
expenses,
and
other required fees. The scholarship, if
renewed each year for four years,
would
be worth in excess of $100,000.

Anne
Banfich is the daughter
of Mr.
& Mrs. Peter Banfich of Plymouth,
Indiana.
She
matriculated at Indiana University in the fall
of 2004.
Anne was four-year student. She
was named the Senior Prefect for the
Culver Academies, effective for the start
of the 2003-04 school year.
As selected by peers in upper-level
student leadership positions, the Senior
Prefect represents the voice of Culver
Girls Academy through her association with
the Dean of Girls and a variety of
constituencies. She coordinates the
government of all dorms to ensure
consistency and communication among them.
She is charged with the responsibility of
seeing that all dorm chairwomen and
prefects fulfill their responsibilities.
Anne received both Gold A (3.7
grade-point average or better during a
given semester) and Silver A (3.2
grade-point average or better) Awards at Culver.
She also was a member of the three-time
state champion lacrosse team for three
consecutive years, earning All-American honors
as a junior and senior in goal.

Clay
Lewis, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Lewis of
Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania, graduated
with the class of 2003 and followed two
older brothers to the United States
Military Academy at West Point.
The
top all-around male student at Culver with
better than a 4.2 grade-point average,
Clay was selected to represent the
Academies at the Presidential Classroom
Scholars Program in Washington, D.C. Held
the last week of January in 2002, the
seminar focused on a broad view of the
federal government.
A member of the Blue Key Society who also was awarded
Cum Laude Society status, he lettered
three times in lacrosse, and in May of
2001 was the recipient of the Thomas Hyde
Medal, presented to the best new cadet in
the Infantry or Band. His leadership roles
ranged from unit first sergeant and
infantry battalion sergeant major to
lieutenant and member of the regimental
staff.

Kathryne Elizabeth
Walsh,
the daughter of
Capt.
and Mrs. John Walsh of Stony Brook, New
York graduated with the class of 2003 and
matriculated at Wellesley College.
She
received three Gold A’s. Attained with a
grade-point average of 3.7 or better, the
award is the highest academic honor
available during a given semester. She
also earned three Silver A’s (3.2
grade-point average or better) and earlier
this year was named a recipient of the
American Association of Teachers of French
Outstanding High School Student in French
Award.
Most recently, Kathryne was selected
as an England Speaking Union Scholar to
study next year at Dover College. She is
one of three Culver students and one of 30
in the country to earn the honor. She also
performed in the spring play as a
sophomore and as a junior.

Haining
“Helen” Yu, the daughter of
Mr.
Yueyi Yu and Mrs. Jianchu Jin of
Alpharetta, Georgia, graduated with the
class of 2003 and matriculated at Georgia
Institute of Technology.
She received six consecutive Gold A’s.
Attained with a grade-point average of 3.7
or better, the award is the highest
academic honor available during a given
semester.
Helen is a member of the Blue Key
society and attained Cum Laude Society
status prior to her senior year, scoring
1520 on her SAT as a junior. In September
of 2002, she was named one of 16,000
National Merit Scholarship semifinalists,
representing the top one percent of more
than 1.3 million seniors who entered the
competition by taking the 2001 Preliminary
SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test. She
moved on to be one of Culver’s two
finalists for the award. She also had two
letters in fencing and was co-captain of
the team this past winter.

Lauren
Zurbrugg is the daughter
of Mr.
and Mrs. Tony (N'64) Zurbrugg of Culver,
Indiana.
She
matriculated at The Royal School in
England in the fall of 2004 as part of the
English Speaking Union Scholars
Program.
She
was a four-year student, who received
seven Silver A Awards and a Gold
A as a senior.
Effective at the start of the 2003-04 school
year, Lauren was the Culver Girls Academy
Council Chair and the president of the
Community Service Council.
She received the CGA Council Award as a
senior.
During
the first leadership rotation in the fall
of her junior year, she was selected to
serve as secretary to the Culver Girls
Academy Council, the highest leadership
position for a junior girl.
At the end of her junior year she
received the Bertha L. Jones Award-
established to honor Mrs. Jones, who as
Academy Librarian from 1966-1990, gave
unselfishly of her time and energy to
enhance the educational opportunities for
girls at Culver. The award is given to the junior girl who by her outstanding
constructive influence among her peers has
made a significant contribution to Culver
Girls Academy. In addition, she
was a varsity fencer, co-captain
of the women’s epee team and competed
four years in the sport at the
Junior Olympics Fencing Championships. Lauren spent four weeks at
Oxford University in England prior to her
senior year, participating in the Oxford
Advanced Studies Program.
