The Culver Academies' First Class of Batten Scholars

 

Chosen for their superior record of academic achievement, personal character, and demonstrated leadership in extracurricular activities, these students participate in fully-funded enrichment programs designed to foster their intellectual and moral growth.  During the spring break of their sophomore year, each participated in a work project in sites around the world, including China, Israel, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Vietnam, Greece, New York City, Washington DC, and St. John's Island, SC.  In the summer following their junior year, they participated in an off-site summer study program at major universities in the US and abroad.

 


 

          Ryan A. Guthrie, son of Glenn Guthrie of Eugene, Oregon, graduated with the class of 2003 and matriculated at the University of Oregon.  

         A letterwinner in both track and cross country, he earned four Gold A's (3.7 grade-point average or better during a given semester) and one Silver A (3.2 grade-point average or better) during his tenure at the Academies.   

           Ryan was selected as the regimental personnel and auditorium officer for the second leadership rotation, effective November 17, 2002.  In this leadership position, he coordinated and supervised the activities dealing with personnel in conjunction with the Commandant of Cadets and the Battalion and Squadron Adjutants. 

                          He assisted the Regimental Commander in the administration of the New Cadet System and sponsor program, and he was primarily concerned with the morale and well-being of the Corps of Cadets.  He was an ex-officio member of the Honor Council, and was responsible to the Regimental Commander for coordinating the standards of appearance of the Corps.

 


Catherine Anne Green, the daughter of Leonard and the late Karen Green of Bedford, Indiana, graduated with the class of 2003 and matriculated at Duke University.

She was the recipient of six consecutive Gold A’s and seven overall.  Earned with a grade-point average of 3.7 or better, the award is the highest academic honor presented during a semester.  She also earned one Silver A (3.2 grade-point average or better). 

A member of Court Dorm, Anne was selected as Honor Council Chair for the third leadership rotation, effective March 12. She was the Aide to the Administration and Alumni during the second leadership rotation. She also was a member of the Blue Key Society, Cum Laude, the Student Admissions Organization and served as president of the Campus Activities Board. During her tenure at the Academies, Anne was an exceptional athlete as well, earning three varsity letters in girls’ tennis and two in girls’ volleyball.

Anne also was recognized as a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program at the start of this year. Although Commended Students are not selected to continue in the 2003 competition for Merit Scholarship awards, they placed among the top five percent of more than one million students who entered the competition by taking the 2001 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

 


 

          Max Rosenthal graduated with the Class of 2002 and matriculated at Georgetown University.  The son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rosenthal, of Fairfield, Connecticut, Max earned seven Gold A’s, Culver’s highest academic honor reserved for students earning a minimum semester grade point average of 3.7, and one Silver A, awarded to students earning a minimum semester grade point average of 3.2.    A four-year student at The Academies, Max received the Blue Key Award from the Blue Key Society, an academic honor organization for juniors.  As a senior, he was named to the Culver Chapter of the Cum Laude Society, a national academic honor organization for seniors.  He received the General Douglas MacArthur Award, presented to the cadet who best exemplifies the traits of leadership, commitment to duty, and personal honor embodied by MacArthur, and he served in several leadership positions.  As a senior he  reached the second highest rank in the Corps when he was named Regimental Adjutant.   Max was selected to participate in the Presidential Classroom Scholars Program in Washington, D.C., the nation’s leading civic education program, providing high school juniors and seniors an introduction to how the federal government works.     

 Through the Batten Scholarship requirement of participation in a spring break project, Max joined the Culver mission team that went to China during his junior-year spring break.  As a senior, he participated with the team that went to Israel.  The scholarship also provides for an off-site summer study program after the junior year at a college or university in the U.S. or abroad, and Max spent the summer following his junior year at the Naval Academy Summer Seminar.  Upon his return, he went to Krefeld, Germany, via Indiana University's Honors Program in foreign languages, which involves students in a seven-week program in a variety of countries.  Max was a member of the soccer and baseball teams.  He ran cross country, and was a three-year varsity swimmer.  At the beginning of his senior year he was named a National Merit Scholar, Commended.  He also was a member of the Student Admissions Organization, an extension of the admissions office that provides prospective students and their parents with tours of the Culver campus. 

 


 

         Sarina Guerrettaz, daughter of Michael and Gwendolyn Guerrettaz of Brazil, Indiana, graduated with the class of 2003 and matriculated at Butler University in Indianapolis.  A member of Benson Dorm, Guerrettaz served as Admission Prefect until March 12, 2003, when the final of three leadership rotations of the school year began. As selected by the Culver Girls Academy student life staff, the Admission Prefect is a vital link between the student experience at the Academies and the Admissions Department.

During her tenure at The Academies, she earned four Gold A’s, representative of a grade-point average of 3.7 or better during a given semester and two Silver A’s, representative of a grade-point average of 3.2 or better. An honors in dance recipient who was a member of DanceVision for four years, she was executive officer for the CGA Drill Team, served in the Student Admissions Organization for four years and was a member of both choir and Cordon Society for two years.

 


          Stephanie Sheppard, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sheppard, Jr. of Webster Groves, Missouri, graduated as the salutatorian of the Class of  2002 and matriculated at Washington University in St. Louis.

          Stephanie held a variety of leadership positions at Culver, ending her Culver career as the Chaplain's Prefect. At the end-of-the-year Awards Convocation, Stephanie was one of 27 seniors who received the President's Education Award. 

          A four-year member of the girls softball and volleyball teams, she was named softball MVP her junior and senior years.  Also, as a junior she was named to the Blue Key Society for her superior scholastic performance.
