Graduating with Honors
FOREIGN LANGUAGE - CHINESE
Description: The Honors Program in Chinese permits the student to expand his/her knowledge of Chinese language, literature and culture under the guidance of an advisor. The student earns valuable experience in how to prepare and defend a research paper.
Prerequisites: The student must be enrolled in or have completed Chinese IV with a minimum grade of B.
Timetable: The project is to be started at the beginning of the third term and completed by the first week in May.
Requirements:
- Speaking - oral dialogue in Chinese with the committee of Chinese teachers.
- Reading - Standardized examination administered, dealing with grammar, idiomatic phrases, and literacy interpretation / biography text passages.
- Writing - an essay in Chinese of approximately five typed pages dealing with a predetermined topic from a literacy work.
Advisor: The advisor is a teacher who monitor the student's progress as regards he literacy work and stands ready to aid the student when possible.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE- FRENCH
Description: The Honors program in French permits the student to expand his or her knowledge of French language, literature, and culture under the guidance of an advisor. Honors in French are presented to those students who have demonstrated excellence in their study of the French language and who successfully undertake and complete a project and/or paper in French on an approved and related topic.
Prerequisites: The candidate must be enrolled in French 4 or French 4 AP and must have previously completed French 3H or French 4 with a grade of B or better.
Timetable: At the beginning of their terminal year, candidates must inform a French instructor about their interest in pursuing honors. The project or research is to be started by the second week of Term 2 and the final product must be submitted to the advisor by the first week in May.
Requirements:
- The candidate will complete in French a research paper of 20 or more typed pages excluding index and bibliography. The topic will be agreed to by both advisor and candidate, and will be of a scholarly and serious nature. After submission of the paper, the candidate will give an oral defense in French of his or her work before a panel of at least two French instructors.
- Or, the candidate will complete in French a project of approved length and scope. The project can be (i) creative writing, such as poetry or short story, or (ii) performance, such as theater or recitation. In either case, the project will be agreed to by both the advisor and the candidate, and will be of a scholarly and serious nature. The candidate will perform and/or discuss in French his or her project before a panel of at least two French instructors.
In addition to the successful completion of either of the above, the candidates must earn a final grade of B or better in their terminal year French class(es).
Advisor: The candidate's advisor is usually the current instructor of the AP class, but may be chosen from among any of the French instructors if so desired. The advisor must approve of the candidate's project or paper, and will guide the candidate and encourage his or her progress. The advisor will also serve on the oral defense panel.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE - GERMAN
Description: The Honors Program in German permits the student to expand his/her knowledge of German language, literature, and culture under the guidance of an advisor. The student earns valuable experience in how to prepare and defend a research paper, the topic of which must be agreed upon by the student and the advisor.
Prerequisites: The student must be enrolled in or have completed German 3 or 4 AP with a minimum grade of B.
Timetable: The project should be under way by the first week in February and completed by the first week in May.
Requirements:
- Speaking - oral dialogue in German with the committee of German teachers.
- Reading - standardized examination administered, dealing with grammar, idiomatic phrases, and literary interpretation/biography text passages.
- Writing - an essay in German of approximately five typed pages dealing with a predetermined topic from a literary work.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE - LATIN
Description: The Honors Program in Latin permits the student to expand his/her knowledge of Latin language, Roman culture, and Latin literature under the guidance of an advisor.
Prerequisites: The student must be enrolled in or have completed Latin 4 AP and doing at least B work in the class.
Timetable: The project should be decided upon by the first week in November. The project should be started no later than the beginning of the third term and completed by the first week in May.
Requirements: The student will be required to do additional readings in Latin, which are agreed upon with the advisor. This will typically involve reading about 50% more than that required by the AP syllabus. The candidate will submit a paper dealing with the readings, as well as take an oral and written exam over the material read.
Advisor: The advisor will be the student's AP teacher who will ensure that the candidate is making timely progress toward the completion of the project and who will be a source of help when problems arise.
Costs: There may be a cost to purchase the necessary readings, but it probably would not exceed $20.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE - SPANISH
Description: The Honors in Spanish permits the student to expand his/her knowledge of Spanish language, literature, and culture under the guidance of an advisor. The student may complete a research paper or submit an idea for a project to his/her academic advisor in the Spanish department.
Prerequisites: The student must be enrolled in or have completed Spanish 4 or Spanish 4 AP with a minimum grade of B.
Timetable:
- Name of project by the first week in November.
- Bibliography by the first week in December.
- Note cards by the first week in February.
- Work completed by the first week in May.
Requirements: Research papers must be twelve to fifteen pages in length. All research papers and projects must be approved by the advisor. The student must give an oral defense in Spanish of the project with at least two Spanish instructors present.
Advisor: The advisor guides the student through the project and makes sure the student complies with all deadlines.
