12th Grade History Elective

Through the study of history, political science, economics, religion, philosophy, and global affairs, students develop not only intellectual and analytical skills but also a grasp of ethics, morality, and historical perspective that will help them to become responsible citizens of the world.

During their final year at Culver, in addition to a required one-term Government course, seniors are able to choose from a variety of History elective courses that focus intensively on specific subjects, topics, themes, and skills. The History elective program builds on and refines the academic, analytical and imaginative skills developed in students' first three years of high school. In addition to preparing students for the choices available in college, the elective system allows students a new way to acquire ownership and take responsibility for their education. Most importantly, the elective system enables students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of their chosen area(s) of study by taking a disciplinary approach to the topic. Since seniors are most capable of thinking globally and critically, the elective curriculum enables them to engage morally with, and understand the complexities of, the world in such a way that they can be informed, discerning, and responsible citizens.
