Through the study of a variety of literatures, students develop both the intellectual and analytical skills necessary for the study of English, and the ethical, moral, and imaginative sensibilities that will make them responsible citizens of the world. 

During their final year at Culver, seniors are able to choose from a variety of English elective courses that focus intensively on specific authors, genres, themes, or skills. The English elective program builds on and refines the academic skills and imaginative capacity developed in students' first three years of high school. In addition to preparing students for the choices available in college, the elective system also allows students a new way to acquire ownership and take responsibility for their education. Perhaps most importantly, the elective system provides a discipline-based platform for rich exposure to the beauty and power of language and the questions and problems of being human to our students who, as seniors, are most cognitively capable of thinking globally and critically. The inquiry that seniors are capable of, in combination with the diversity of the elective curriculum, enables students to morally engage with and understand the complexities of the world in such a way that they can be discerning and responsible citizens.
