Music

Culver offers many rich, diverse opportunities for students as they develop their musical skills and interests. Students may participate in numerous vocal and instrumental ensembles; or enroll in "Special Topics" courses such as the "History of Rock 'n' Roll" and "Ragtime to Rap." The Honors in Music program and Advanced Placement Music Theory and Music History courses are available for those looking toward further studies in college.

Each year, several Culver students are selected by audition to participate in the All-State Choir. The vocal music ensembles perform off-campus for various groups and events as well. Students also have the opportunity to sing in collaboration with visiting and area choirs and to work with distinguished guest artists. Culver's Instrumental Music program regularly accommodates over 120 students in the Band and Orchestra classes. In addition to the large ensembles, many smaller ensembles rehearse and perform throughout the year, including Chamber Winds, Jazz Band, Brass Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Flute Ensemble, and String Quartets. Several public concerts are offered during the course of the school year. Playing in the pit orchestra in the annual Spring Musical is another exciting, challenging performance opportunity.

Private music lessons are offered in piano, voice, brass, woodwind, string, and percussion instruments, as well as guitar and bagpipes. Guests artists also come to campus to work with students in master-classes. Students interested in serious development of their solo skills often pursue graduation with Honors in Music, which involves performances, considerable study, and a thorough understanding of the music they perform.
