CULVER ATHLETE/COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS

We know many Culver students have a strong desire to continue playing athletics in college. We work closely with the student, parents and coaches when athletics plays an important role in the decision of where to attend college. If athletics is a strong consideration, the College Advising Office should be notified early in the student's Junior year.

We make sure that each student-athlete who is considering either a Division I or Division II athlete is registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center before the student leaves for Summer Break after their Junior year. Students who are interested in Division III athletics are not required to apply to the NCAA Eligibility Center.  As college advisors, many of us have extensive backgrounds in athletics and will be happy to work with students in this area. We do ask that students keep their college advisors informed with any school or university contacts they have made so that we may be informed when speaking to colleges and college coaches.

TESTING/GRADES/COURSE SELECTION

Students interested in Division I and II athletics also must be aware that course selection and SAT and ACT testing are very importants part of the process. Attached is the Guide to the College-Bound Student Athlete which should be read thoroughly by every student considering college athletics. As a Culver student, you will be taking the courses which are required by the NCAA automatically since Culver graduation requirements exceed those required by the NCAA.  Because eligibility in the NCAA is determined by the students course selection, performance in class and their SAT & ACT scores, it is the responsibility of each student to earn the best scores possible.  Final NCAA eligibility is determined when a student graduates from Culver.

CONTACT RULES

Please understand there are certain contact rules as described in the NCAA Guide to the College-Bound Student-Athlete. These would include anything from phone calls, the amount of mail you can receive and official visits and these differ each year a student is in high school. These contact rules are usually restrictive to the coach and not to the student. Students are allowed to contact coaches at anytime but understand if a coach does not get right back to you it may be due to prescribed rules they must adhere to. These rules are especially strict for the Division I and Division II athletes. The rules are much less rigid for Division III athletes and allow open contact from coaches from the very beginning.

ATHLETICS AND FINANCIAL AID

While a student-athlete may be offered an athletic scholarship, the true name is called an Athletic Grant-In-Aid or a Talent Grant. While you may believe athletics is the driving force in this offer, you need to know you will still be required to apply through the financial aid process. This will include filling out the FAFSA and in some cases the CSS Profile. Please make sure when offered your athletic Grant-In-Aid you make sure to follow this process and keep in touch with the coach. It would be our strong suggestion that you do not sign anything until you have a clear picture of what your financial package will look like over a 4-year period of time. This would be especially true at all Division I and Division II schools. Division III schools can still give you a preliminary idea of what your financial package will look like but their award will be strictly based on need and not on athletics since they do not award an Athletic Grant-In-Aid. Please do not be afraid to ask questions of the school and of the Culver College Advising Office.
