John Buggeln joined the Culver Humanities Department in the fall of 2003. He earned a bachelor's degree in history with a minor in environmental biology from Middlebury College and a master's degree in religion from Yale University Divinity School. He earned a PhD in history in conjunction with the American Studies and Religious Studies Departments at Indiana University, Bloomington, where he began his teaching career. Before coming to Culver, he taught history at a private day school for ten years in Delaware, where he taught US history, AP European, AP World History, and global issues. Since coming to Culver, he has taught 10th grade humanities and coordinated and taught in the 11th-grade American Studies Program. He has strong interests in interdisciplinary learning, global education, supporting international students and English language learners, and integrating technology into teaching. He has supported the work of the Global Studies Institute by directing the Culver in China Program, developing video conferencing exchanges, and advising students doing advanced research in history and global studies.

Dr. Buggeln has been sailing since his childhood in Michigan and is an assistant sailing coach. His wife is a university professor, and together they have two children.
