 “Water, Health, and the Environment”

March 20 – April 1, 2014

The team traveling to Bali, Indonesia and Singapore will consider the issues of “Water, Health and the Environment” and experience some of the rich culture of the locations visited. Bali, a popular destination in Asia, attracts around a million tourists each year. Along with learning a bit about the culture of Bali and enjoying the beach, students will be introduced to current coastal and marine conservation initiatives. Later, the team will travel to Manado, Minahasa in North Sulawesi. Even though the majority of Indonesia’s 260 million people are Muslim, Minahasa is a predominantly Christian area with churches that are very active in community service. In Minahasa, the team will participate in a project to help provide water to an elementary school in a small village.  The group will also work with the children in two elementary schools to start a clean water and healthy living campaign. In Minahasa there will also be another chance to journey out onto the ocean to learn about coastal resource protection. A bit of snorkeling to view the coral reefs of Bunaken is part of the plan!  The last stop on the trip will be Singapore, where the team will explore the more modern, metropolitan side of Asia and learn how Singapore protects and uses their limited water resources.  This GPS opportunity will involve both learning and service in three very different sites.  Contact Mr. Johnnes Tulungen at Johnnes.Tulungen@culver.org or Mrs. Catherine Tulungen at Catherine.Tulungen@culver.org  or Dr. John Buggeln at John.Buggeln@culver.org  for more information.

Estimated cost is $4,150.
