Recent Trips
Recent Trips
China 2012
Education/Cultural
The team traved to the Peoples' Republic of China to deepen Culver's exchange program with the Shanghai Foreign Language School. Highlights included attending classes at the school, tours of Shanghai after Expo2010, a home stay in Shanghai, visiting Beijing, the site of the 2008 Olympic Games, the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and building friendships with students in China.
Itlay 2012
Educational/Cultural/Course (1/2 Humanities Credit)
Students who participated in the educational and cultural immersion class in Spoleto, Italy experienced the world of the Renaissance city in situ while examining its origins and outcomes. They observed not only how this community defined itself (through architecture, art, literature, and the philosophy of humanism); but also how it continues to underlie and define the modern communities that built upon it.
Mexico 2012
Construction/Labor/Cultural
The group traveled to Mexico as part of the Culver Building Bridges Habitat for Humanity Mexico Program to work in partnership with another high school in a foreign country. Students, faculty, and staff from Culver Academies and The Culver Community High School constructed three Habitat for Humanity homes in the community of Bajos de Chila in Puerto Escondido. The team worked together with a common goal to make a significant difference in the community and families who will live in the Culver-Habitat homes.
Portugal 2012
Educational/Service/Cultural
Among other activities, students worked with the ProAtlantico Portugal organization working with youth and disabled youth in a variety of service projects for four days. They also met local youths to have conversations and social activities to learn about their culture and so that they can learn about ours.
South Africa 2012
Educational/Service/Cultural
In connection with CGA's Leadership Committee for Africa. Team South Africa worked in Cape Town with Christel House South Africa (CHSA) whose mission is "to help children break the cycle of poverty and become self-sufficient, contributing members of their society." The team taught leadership skills and other activities to students at CHSA and continued to build on the partnership that Culver and CHSA have developed in three previous trips since 2006. The experience also included Johannesburg and a trip to Pilansburg as well as visits to historic and cultural sites.
