Theatre Curriculum

Introduction to Theatre (655)

1 term, solid, 1/2 credit

The world of theatre, from an historical perspective to a theoretical point of view, is introduced. Students study world theatre, exploring the historical timeline of Western theatre from the Greeks to modern day, and examining the work of designers, technicians, actors, directors, writers, and the role of the audience. Some practical work is done, especially in the field of technical theatre, such as designing sets, costumes and lights.

Film Studies (656)

1 term, solid, 1/2 credit

This one-term course, meeting daily, is open to 11th and 12th graders. It explores one specific genre of film at a time, using pairs of films for comparison. Students analyze and critique film as both an art form, and in comparison with other written and oral histories. The class identifies when the director may have altered historical fact and possible motives for the change. It also explores genres such as science fiction, taking into account the time period in which the film was produced, the historical context of the filmmaker’s argument, and why he has placed it in a different time and place.

Acting I (658)

2 terms, non-solid, 1/2 credit

This two-term course, meeting twice per week, is an introduction to the development of the physical and intellectual tools the actor needs on stage. The course begins with basic stage movement and pantomime and continues through beginning monologue and scene work.

Acting II 659

2 terms, non-solid, 1/2 credit

Acting II is a two-term course meeting twice per week. The first half of this class deals with the problems and challenges that face the actor in musical theatre. It combines dance, song, and scene work to assist students’ success in musical auditions and performances. In the second half of the class, students concentrate on scene work and film work, with deeper exploration of character, using more classic and modern classic texts. Students are advised to complete Acting I
before taking Acting II.
