John Gouwens

Organist and Carillonneur

John Gouwens joined the faculty of the Culver Academies in the fall of 1980. He serves as Organist and Carillonneur of The Academies, playing both instruments for Sunday religious services as well as presenting recitals on both instruments. He teaches piano students at The Academies, and teaches carillon and organ students on occasion.

He studied organ and carillon at Indiana University (Bloomington), the University of Michigan (Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance, 1979), and the University of Kansas (Master of Music in Organ Performance, 1981). He was raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His instructors included Richard Carlson, Clyde Holloway, Robert Clark, and Robert Glasgow in organ, and Albert Gerken in carillon.

Gouwens has for many years chaired the Committee on Faculty/Staff Affairs, which addresses issues of benefits, salaries, and evaluations.

He is active outside of Culver as a recitalist (organ and carillon), composer, and music editor, as well as playing an active role in area chapters of the American Guild of Organists.
