The Competitions

The School for the Entrepreneur hosts several competitions each year. 
The Miclot Competition

Thanks to an endowment by Andy and Sharlene Miclot of Austin, Texas, The Ron Rubin School for the Entrepreneur’s Miclot Business Plan Competition provides Culver students with a realistic competition requiring teamwork, collaboration, and field research, under the guidance of a mentor entrepreneur.

Any Culver student is eligible to compete in the Miclot Business Plan Competition.

A business plan includes a description of the product, company, or service and its market need. Competitive products, companies, or services are assessed, analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of each competitor. The plan includes the unique selling propositions of the product or service, along with future growth and characteristics of the market.

How do I compete?

You may form a team or compete as an individual. No team may have more than 3 members. Each team must designate a “captain”, and have a mentor-entrepreneur. The mentor-entrepreneur must be an adult with actual business or entrepreneurial experience. A student competing alone must also have a mentor-entrepreneur.

The Elevator Competition

You Have Three Minutes!

Have you ever had that “sudden idea” you never told anyone about? You know, the idea to launch a business, build a better mousetrap, or make the world a better place? Well, here’s your chance.

What’s an elevator competition? The average ride on an elevator is less than 3 minutes. You really don’t have a Big Idea if you can’t make your “pitch” to an investor in that amount of time. Set in an imaginary elevator, contestants have exactly 3 minutes to “pitch” their idea to investors, who are along for the ride.

How to compete

The contest is open to any 7th or 8th grade student in your school. To enter, a student must submit a blind copy of their brainstorm. There may be only one entry per student. The submission must describe the idea in no more than 150 words. An “honors” box must be checked, indicating the submission is entirely the work of the applicant.

A few examples might be...

  • an idea likely to be developed into a product or service.
  • an idea likely to be developed into a company, generating profits and new jobs.
  • an idea likely to result in a viable service organization or social venture.
  • an idea that creatively addresses a problem.

A submission, either hard copy or electronic, must be typed, 12pt. font, double spaced. Submissions must be delivered/sent to your Head of Middle School no later than the end of the school day, Friday, January 27, 2017.

Submissions will be evaluated, and the 8 finalists at each school selected, by student entrepreneurs at Culver Academies. They will use the following criteria: a) creativity and originality; b) clarity of expression; and c) practicality.

The eight contestants at each school will make their “pitch” in front of two professional entrepreneurs, who will serve as judges. The judges’ evaluation rubric will be provided each school prior to the first round.

The first round will be the first week of February. The winner will earn $500.00, and the first runner up a $50.00 gift certificate from Barnes & Noble. Both will advance to the final round and compete with the two winners at four other schools.

The final round of the competition will be at The Speak Easy on Winthrop Avenue, Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. The final round winner will earn a check for $1,000.00.

What was the 2014 “Inspire Us” video competition about?

The competition was open to all students, faculty, and staff. In a 1-minute video, contestants were asked to provide the new Rubin Café with a sales incentive, marketing idea, or promotional feature. Check out Conner’s winning video.
